Why do we switch fuel tanks before landing?

I agree with everyone else, I don't switch fuel tanks in the pattern. I also don't switch tanks between leaving the ramp and initial climbout. I've seen some checklists phrase it "switch to a tank with fuel" which is slightly better. Really what this is all about is making sure you're not...

The "Back in my day" Thread

I'm reminded of a conversation I had when my dad... would have been in the late 90s and I would have been around 17. I asked if I could have $20 to go to a nearby town and do stuff with my friends. He grumbled and said he and his friends used to be able to have fun and all they needed was a...

    Flying to Florida

I usually fly down to FL a couple of times a year but I'm more familiar with the west coast. I'm flying a Lance which is almost the same aircraft you're flying. I would just go direct unless there's some specific thing on your route you're avoiding. Be on flight following if you're VFR, that...

    DOGE and the FAA

Also sport pilot existed for a long time before that only requiring a valid driver’s license. As far as I’m aware there wasn’t a significant difference in medically related accidents between sport pilots and private pilots holding a third class. IMHO among people with the means and training...

    DOGE and the FAA

I have good internet access for the first time in a very long time because Starlink exists. A lot of politicians from the local level all the way up to president promised something "just around the corner" for nearly 2 decades. Starlink was the first promise that actually delivered. That one...

What is the history of FAA Medical certification?

So this is something I'm curious about and I can't seem to find the answer from simple google searches. When did the FAA start requiring pilots to have medical certification? Was the class 1, 2, 3 stuff there from the beginning or did they ever do something else? Was there an incident that...

Balancing Moderation for a Thriving Community

I think for the most part the mods here do pretty good. I've been on internet forums most of my adult life, been a mod/admin before, etc. There is no perfect formula. Speech and especially humor are such subjective things. My over the line is not going to be your over the line. Moderation...

    DOGE and the FAA

I think like a lot of things people are discussing post election, we really don't know and anyone's predictions range from educated guesses to wild speculation. My wild speculation is that the FAA will be way down the priorities list and GA specifically will be even farther down. Also just in...

FFS. I need a new hobby.

I've had fewer issues buying tractor parts on ebay in a lifetime than you're having buying certified aircraft parts from actual aircraft suppliers for one project.

    Really?

You know sometimes I'm annoyed by the no political discussion rule but here in the last month or two and especially the past 48 hours I'm kind of glad there's one place on the internet I can go and hang out without it being a thing. But free the puppies! Justice for canine kind! No more...

The self-flagellation of the frugal and mechanically minded(a rant)

I know quiet is a big thing for some people but honestly if it got the dishes clean every time and didn't break down it could be as loud as a lawnmower for all I care. Ok maybe not literally as loud as a lawn mower but... we've got a young kid, dogs, etc. Our house isn't going to be quiet...

The self-flagellation of the frugal and mechanically minded(a rant)

Guys, guys.... you're pilots. Are you not reminding your wives of that then correcting them? Sometimes people forget and you have to remind them so they know you're right about everything.

The self-flagellation of the frugal and mechanically minded(a rant)

This thing only has a screen which is only removable by taking out about a dozen screws. There's also a vent on the side for a small plastic container/trap which houses the water level switch... this vent has no screen and I believe must be how pieces of stuff too big to get past the screen...

The self-flagellation of the frugal and mechanically minded(a rant)

You know, after the Scout I swore never again to take on something with that level of body rot. Then one day my wife left me unsupervised and this LTD convertible... which is relatively rare... shows up on marketplace. It looks mostly clean just a few spots I can easily fix. Now the wire...

Insight Wanted: Survey on Catastrophic Oil Leak Detection

Define catastrophic. To me catastrophic implies a leak bad enough that the engine will be starved of oil in minutes or less.

Closed the Deal - Piper Lance

Unknown. We stopped for lunch in Venice, FL. When we came back there was a flock gathered. They were not congregating anywhere else just at my plane.

Closed the Deal - Piper Lance

That’s a really similar color scheme to mine. Any questions just ask- there are several of us on here with these planes. Power wise just get used to moving the throttle a little slower than you would in a typical trainer. Also avoid chopping the throttle on final- it will drop like a...
