Hot starts and engine shut downs

Not going to comment on this specific procedure much as it seems to vary based on plane. But I will say that it sounds like the shutdown is designed to set the plane up for the start-up. There really isn't any reason to do any of that stuff except to leave things how you want them for a hot...

    Tug question....again!

I own a BestTug A3 and have used probably 6 or 8 other ones over the years. I have to say, even with their price being what they are, I haven't regretted the BestTug once. Every single other one just seems like a toy in comparison.

Insurance Company Throws A Logical Twist

Yep. Or the one that required 30 hours of tailwheel time to insure me, but when I wanted to add skis didn't care what kind I had nor that I had zero ski time and wrote the insurance equivalent of "SEND IT!" for no added premium when I asked what would be required. Or the ones that don't care...

Triple 4, double charlie - does it annoy you?

I used to do that, but became convinced by others that in the ADSB era it was better to use call signs. They can see me on their devices much further away than they can identify my type looking out the window. And, since the entire point is situational awareness, it seemed better to be able to...

    [NA] buying land

I would love to have a low flow well at our place in Mexico. We had to build a cistern and capture rain water from the house. That generally lasts us until about January, then we have water trucked in. You can get storage tanks big enough for household needs for a small number of AMUs. If you...

Lone Rock, Wisconsin (KLNR) Fly-in/Camp-in August 23-25

I don't, sorry. I'm taking the day off and will be fiddling around with final prep, but I don't know about timing for others.

Lone Rock, Wisconsin (KLNR) Fly-in/Camp-in August 23-25

We have 15 planes and 20 people confirmed so far. Friday night I've arranged transportation to a local supper club. Saturday morning breakfast is available at the on-field airport. Then the Johnson Bros will be doing their shop tour and talk about the vagabond they are restoring. Later I'll talk...

This is about the most pointless NOTAM I've seen

Just had this problem at KLNR two days ago!

    Dan Gryder Lockheed Electra Crash

When I was young there was still just a single kid going by Dick. He's now a Richard also. I definitely understand the Karens phenomena! My generation is going to be the last in the nursing homes with that name.

    Oshkosh 2024 - Who's going?

You know, I noticed the beer and wine in the N40 store and totally didn't connect that with the rule prohibiting alcohol! I guess as long as you don't try to bring it through the main gate, you're good!

    Oshkosh 2024 - Who's going?

That's my favorite rule of them all.

Just Bought Land On Paved Runway :)

I read "clubhouse" and I think "private". Can you confirm that you are talking about The Settings Restaurant and that it's open to the public?

    Rachet tie down question

Nope. But google told me. My point is more about the fact that rope (and straps, in fairness) start degrade the first time they are exposed to weather, sun or tied in a knot. The storm that took my plane was very strong, but it's also true that I haven't trusted ropes provided by an FBO since.

    Rachet tie down question

Yeah, for sure. If one if going to pick ratchets, gotta pick ones with ratchet mechanisms that are strong enough for the task. I've accumulated probably a couple dozen over the years here at the farm that I'm very confident are strong enough to hold a tarp on whatever I'm trying to keep dry...

    Rachet tie down question

I feel very confident that the reason is that it's cheap. :-)

    Rachet tie down question

In my experience that hard part is knowing if the rope is "quality" or not. Here's exactly that, a rope failing before a knot.

    Rachet tie down question

Ok, that's fair. At a minimum because the tire flexes more or less as the weight on it changes. And, as I mentioned before, I think the tipping force is a bigger deal than the plane actually trying to fly, which reinforces your point as well. Yeah, always use a hook with a safety catch. The...

    Rachet tie down question

That's not how the math works. Before the ropes experience the first pound of pull, the wings have to be generating 1501 pounds of lift. For the ropes to experience 1500 pounds of pull, the wings have to be generating 3000 pounds of lift. But in real life, I suppose the main problem is not...

    Rachet tie down question

I use shock straps these days. They have the dual advantage of not shocking the plane when the wings pick up and providing a little bit of give, which makes it super easy to make sure everything is snug, but not pulling down on the wings. I just ratchet until the slack is taken up, then pull on...
