    IFR approaches in VFR flight

I don’t think my CFII ever touched the push-to-talk on any of our flights together.

    IFR approaches in VFR flight

This. The usual “Cessna 4AB inbound on the RNAV 5 at NOWARE” doesn’t help anyone who isn’t familiar with the particular approach and waypoints. Even an instrument-rated pilot won’t get much out of that unless he’s probably a local and has flown the approach a few times. A better way is what I...

    Borescope inspection at KFMY

https://apuaircraftservices.com/ Alex did he prebuy on my plane when I sold it; the buyer hired him. He took numerous excellent borescope photos, and did a thorough exam of the plane and produced and accurate and honest report. I was impressed with his attention to detail and integrity (he...

Southwest Airlines pilot arrested at Georgia airport for allegedly showing up to work intoxicated

Just the written, checkride prep, and checkride. Their previous hours, including training, still count.

    Jeju Air, South Korea

There is that. I’m just always wondering about and looking for better ways to do things, plus need to know the why behind everything.

    Jeju Air, South Korea

Dovetailing off this, is reducing memory items possibly applicable to single-engine piston aircraft for something such as an engine failure? Would the time consumed by using the checklist instead of doing memory items make a critical difference between a restart and an engine-out landing? Or is...

Help with a student fumbling checklists

The checklist for my RV-8A (man, I miss that plane - someday I will have an -8 again and it will be my forever plane). It’s obviously intended for a pilot who knows the plane, as it’s based on flows. It mainly has killer items - things that, if not done, can lead to bent metal or people. A few...

    Bad news for "Half Fast"

When we moved to Florida from the west coast, I was surprised at how many men tuck their shirt in, especially t-shirts with shorts. It’s like a little time capsule from 35 years ago.

    Sac Exec Tower

Foreflight translates it to plain English, albeit noting MNT as monitor/monitored/monitoring. Basically, the tower will be closed during some hours when it’s usually operating. During those times, the tower frequency becomes the CTAF.

How to get THAT smell out of your GA airplane

That was my biggest fear back in my single days.

Grumman electrical failure. Crashes into Cessna on runway.

In that situation - VMC, engine running normally, flight controls functioning - doing anything but a normal landing doesn’t make sense. There was, in fact, no urgency.

    Citation runway overrun in Brazil

Happened in Ubatuba, and the video’s on YoubaTuba (speaking in Mushmouth-ese).

    Drone hits firefighting aircraft

Weak sauce. He knew he couldn’t fly his drone there, and knew it was a hazard to thr firefighters, but did it anyway because he wanted to profit from it. Even it was just for fun and not monetized videos, other drone operators need to know the consequences are real.

    Drone hits firefighting aircraft

Make an example out of him. Emergency revocation of all certificates, plus maximum civil penalty, plus prosecution for any criminal charges that apply. He won’t get custody time, but probation can include a term that he not possess or have control over any drone or other aerial device.

What plane would you fly "just for fun" and to build experience?

They offer factory-built S-21s. One of our neighbors has two S-21s, a taildragger and a trike, mbothnfactory built. I think the price is $200K-ish. I tried looking it up, but their website is atrocious.

What plane would you fly "just for fun" and to build experience?

Tricycle back country capable? Take a look at a Rans S-21 Outbound. A couple of our neighbors fly them. Good enough performers, easy to fly and maintain, and they don’t appear to have any attributes that would rule them out for a low-timer.

    FAA Research Study Kicking Off

I have instructions out to family and friends that if I start to show legit symptoms of age-related cognitive decline, to have The Talk and ground me. Obviously can’t tell how I’d actually react, but the idea is that like a briefing, there are events that trigger execution of a procedure instead...

    Transponder – Class D?

No, but if you have an ADS-B transponder or something like a Tailbeacon, you’re “stuck” having to use it constantly. I don’t know why it’s a problem for some.

    Transponder – Class D?

If you have ADS-B Out, you have to keep it on at all times, in all airspace. 91.225(f)
