Piston twin for the mountains: Do they exist?

What about the old super-charged Twin Bonanzas? They hauled a lot, if not very fast, and had better OEI climb than most.

    Tales of Hangar Construction

Northeast Ohio. Yesterday it was 66 F, today it is snowing with a high of 26 F. A whole year's worth of weather in 24 hours.:mad2: Alex, the availability of larger hangar spaces is nil. My only choice at this airport is a 40' tee-hangar (what I rent today). There is no "community hangar" space...

    Tales of Hangar Construction

The land lease is for 30 years with two 5 year auto-renewal options. I think the rate is about 32 cents per square foot, but that includes the apron. So even a 50x50' box hangar will probably need a 40x50' apron (another 2000 square feet). The minimum rent is $1500 a year regardless, so building...

    Diesel motors for planes?

Ford product? How about Ford? Lord knows they sponsor Airventure pretty well.

    Diesel motors for planes?

Might take some shoehorning, but the SMA diesel that goes in the 182 would probably fit the Skymaster and be appropriately powered. Of course, Deltahawk did this, too. Getting beyond this stage and into commercialization is the trick.

    Tales of Hangar Construction

Right now I rent a t-hangar. I realize that this is far less expensive than owning (or building) a box hangar but for various reasons the idea keeps rattling around in my head. I am contemplating a 50x50 box hangar. Nothing hugely fancy and probably only have electric run to it. Not sure if...

    Diesel motors for planes?

See, you'd think some entrepreneur would buy that IP from the corpse and start their own diesel project based on it. Kind of like starting with a 90% finished part. The big trick to tackle was obviously cost control, but there are plenty of industrialists who are expert in that field. If I...

    Instrument Rating, not needed?

Wow, necrothread. Having read all the pages thus far I daresay it should've stayed in the grave. Though the comedy of, "I fly in all shades of awful with people shooting at me during dust/blizzards/smoke/ash in 1/8sm vis with windshear, convection and icing but I don't accept any risk," was...

    Diesel motors for planes?

Didn't Thielert come out with a V8 diesel Centurion 4.0 that made 350hp? I think there were even some C206 and light twin STCs. Imagine running a Duke on 25 gph Jet A... You'd think that intellectual property would be valuable to SOMEBODY...

    Rating dilemma.

Get IR first, then ME. I just got my IR. But I am waiting until I KNOW I can afford to feed a twin before I buy one and get my ME rating. Meanwhile, my 182 is pretty capable. But I am not going Commercial. My flying is just for my private/business/family use. Why the 8 month lapse?

Should I log it? ILS during VMC

Bob - tower was closed for the evening. And my first instinct agrees with y'all, my logbook is currently bare for actual approaches on that trip.

Should I log it? ILS during VMC

Recent trip to KNEW with my wife we arrived at night. I had never flown into KNEW before and had trouble finding the runway. Most of my night flying I am going into smaller airports out in the country so I just look for the beacon and lights in the middle of nowhere. Can't do that in New Orleans...

    Mardi Gras 2013

Just got back from there. KNEW is the place to be. I parked at Flightline First and am happy with their service. Stay in the French Quarter and do not rent a car. Walk everywhere and just taxi to/from airport. For longer distances after getting stuffed on awesome food, take a pedi-cab...

Piston Aircraft with 200 kts cruise?

How about a T-Bone? Couch in the back and room to get up and walk around. Fast? Not remotely. But it'll haul 1000 pounds a 1000 miles on one fuel load. Fewer gas stops combined with stretching out room might be the ticket. Think of it as a slower, non-pressurized Queen Air. Because...

    Hiring - Airport Manager BJJ

You understand, grasshopper. Insurance costs can eat an employer alive. Aviation is hard enough to make a buck in these days. But that's not a blanket "no". If we made an offer to someone we'd negotiate with them to the point we felt was reasonable. Maybe that's including an HSA or some...
