Are you willing to pay? http://www.weathertap.com/ Otherwise, it would not be hard to create a script to grab the image every x minutes and make your own.

Garmin 396 - Thoughts and Technical Info

Well, After a near nervous breakdown, I now own a 396. Initial thoughts: Very cool Bummer the XM is separate Details: I went to OSH on Monday by 11AM, and ran to Spruce with my kids in tail. After waiting a bit I asked if they had the 396. "Nope, sold them all in 1 hour. Everyone else did...

Garmin 396 - Portable, color, and X/M Weather!

Hmm. So they send the audio via digital (usb) and do D-A conversion in the Garmin? Wonder why? It would seem odd to not have that in the "hockey puck" part. After some serious thought, I am headed to OSH on Monday to see one, and maybe pick one up. If I do, I'll let you know what I find.... S.

Don't hit the LOGOUT button when you leave. It works great then. The "who's online" is not dependent on that (or so I believe). S.

Garmin 396 - Portable, color, and X/M Weather!

I'm also curious: If it attaches via USB, but has an audio out on the GPS itself, there must be some A-D stuff in the GPS. I wonder how much is done in the antenna, and what is doen in the GPS? Is the XM radio ID in the GPS itself or the antenna? How much is a new antenna? It would be nice to...

Garmin 396 - Portable, color, and X/M Weather!

yes, it has usb. It appears identical, just lacking the software pages and the "audio out jack" for the XM audio. It would be interesting to hack the usb protocol and see what is exchanged between the 396 and the XM module...

Garmin 396 - Portable, color, and X/M Weather!

Well, thats kinda jacked. I hoped it was all one unit! Does that mean that sometime (with a software upgrade) my 296 will do XM WX?

We'll be there! I plan on going Monday to score a 396! YEAH! Then probably returning with the family on Thurs - Sunday. Or somewhere more northerly (read cooler), as some of us had discussed? I'd be interested in seeing where everyone came from this time. Was Gaston's still central to everyone?

Gaston's Made it home safe thread.

The Shekels and Lance are home in MSP. Good flight, a bit of rain (not much) and a couple of good bounces but for the most part smooth sailing at 10,000 Lance does appearently have a mechanical problem on the Baron, tho. It would not hold altitude or heading. ;) Mighta been the pilot...
