    Bear Down, Chicago Bears!

While I admit that it seems a little Draconian, it is none-the-less the prerogative of employers to set workplace standards. Even the gov'mint. Whether it's fair or not doesn't seem particularly relevant.

    Rotary wings in Iraq

Good article -- thanks for posting it. How come we never hear about the good stuff that's happening there in the mainstream media?

    Unexpected helo in the pattern

I agree with Ron. Without talking to the tower, there's no way for you to know that the helo pilot did something wrong. There are a number of legitimate reasons to be where he was -- setting up for a practice autorotation might put you there and as might an approved transition of the airspace...

    Unexpected helo in the pattern

Better go back and read 91.126. It refers ONLY to direction of turns and then ONLY in Class G airspace. It has no application at a field with an operating control tower. (b) Direction of turns. When approaching to land at an airport without an operating control tower in Class G airspace—...

    Go/No go decisions

Dave, I will never, ever fault a pilot for making a nogo decision. Break the chain of events leading to an accident when ever you can! Thanks for the report.

Hoo boy! Plane on golf course could be one of ours.

Helicopter polo! Now that has possibilities  I was going to say that the MD 500 series would make a great platform for HP with its stability enhancement. Even batter would be the NOTAR version because you wouldn't have to worry about getting the golf club tangled up in the tail rotor...

    Windy Day in Germany

    Ay Carumba! Here's one flight I'm glad I wasn't on: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ddb_1204404185 http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,334535,00.html

Hoo boy! Plane on golf course could be one of ours.

But it does raise the fascinating question, often debated by local helo pilots: There is an airport 10 nm north of Pottstown Limerick called Butter Valley (7N8 if memory serves). The runway, which is half paved, half grass, runs right down the middle of a golf course. So the all-important...

    FAA flight review insanity

Ken, it was set to expire in 2006! Robinson petitioned the FAA to make it go away. The feds claimed they didn't have time to evaluate, so SFAR 73 stood. I've heard that Robinson has asked the feds to remove the R44 language, but I'm willing to bet they won't... And some people want MORE...

    FAA flight review insanity

My partners and I did our BFRs yesterday. We used one of the Philly Chopper 10 pilots who is also a DPE and does recurrent training for us. Since our ship is awaiting engine reinstallation, Phil brought an R44 from a school where he teaches. He is an exacting taskmaster and put us through...

    Strange coincidence...

Ken, what good is a mountain flying course in a F/W when you can't even land on a pinnacle? :D Chaotic? Just because there's a couple more moving parts? Just because the flight controls kind of interact with each other? This ought to be fun. It's a subset of the US Forest Service...

    Strange coincidence...

I decided that this year instead of doing a vacation type vacation, that I'd do some advanced flight instruction instead. The idea that most appealed was doing a mountain flying course. So I did a post on verticalreference.com asking for recommendations for mountain training. One of the...

    Helos

The difference is that for airplanes type ratings are required for all jets and all planes which gross more than 12500. Note that no type rating is required for turbine powered propeller driven planes. Helicopters are not jets -- they may have rotor systems driven off of the turbine shaft...

There was a real uproar here (I'm guessing it was about a year ago), when the city tried to take action against him on the theory that he was discriminating again non-english speakers. I think it was the city equal opportunity people but I no longer remember a whole lot about it. It made...
