Rant: Exercising PIC, no not that PIC

All these old birds have some nits, but I think this would give me a serious pit in my stomach. Definitely would have made the same decision. You'd think with fancy avionics and a paint job, maybe a little money should be spent on things that won't cause you to become gliding manhole cover...

In the Philadelphia Bravo, no ADSB

Wouldn't this aircraft have a radar return that close the bravo airport? I assume if ATC sees an unidentified aircraft circling near the airport AND they have a problem with it, they have a way to deal with it.

Upcoming AD for many more PA-28 and PA-36 wing spars. 100 anomalies and 6 cracked wings found

I'm trying to understand where my PA-28R-200 is in this. It had "Piper Serivce Kit 764-998" applied that was referred to as "spar doubler" in the log book. Work was done in 2021 before I was the owner. Is this the reinforcement kit that is referred to? EDIT: Disregard, I figured out what...

Hot starts and engine shut downs

When I bought my Arrow (IO-360), the previous owner tried to convey some magical checklists for shutdown and hot start and it seemingly never worked. I always ended up at the flooded checklist. My A&P told me the simplest lists: Shutdown: Throttle to idle then Mix (cut) Music (turn off all...

Best way to create and use custom checklists (electronic vs paper)?

Since I use Foreflight on an iPad mini for essentially everything at this point, I also moved my checklists into there. I still have a stock flipbook of paper ones, but use the customized lists on the iPad.

Triple 4, double charlie - does it annoy you?

I wouldn't know, but you would also be in violation of 87.107(a). My point was not that it wasn't their exact tail number, but more that it's non standard phraseology and in some cases the abbreviation making the radio call longer or confusing the pilot/ATC.

    Stepped in KRAP

I'll have to check that out. I'm not a huge fan of pushing buttons in the cockpit when I'm low and approaching a busy airport, but with some practice I could see how this would be very helpful.

    Stepped in KRAP

I didn't. I was going to on my way out, but the line staff annoyed me by not having fuel my plane over the 3 days they had it and leaving it out back even though their roster had my requested departure time. I took some pens though. LOL

    Stepped in KRAP

Funny you mention this. Had I been thinking about it this way, I would have looked down at my G5 HSI and noticed the GPS pointer that was still programmed to my flight plan swinging around to the west and southwest. I had transitioned to completely visual at this point and frankly was just...

Triple 4, double charlie - does it annoy you?

I got the part about if I checked in with whatever, that's probably what you would use. It's interesting to hear how these situations are all a little nuanced. I wasn't aware there was a different standard that was agreed upon between air carriers and ATC.

Triple 4, double charlie - does it annoy you?

Appreciate the controller perspective. Curious what you as a controller would do if you were reaching out to UAL555 (example above) on guard (I hear a lot of this around Chicago). I wonder if non-standard phraseology trips anyone up. I think I would be guilty if my tail number was something...

    Rudder usage while retracting gear

I never once thought of this, but I can't imagine it being good to go neutral on the rudder while climbing out for the good 5-7 seconds it takes for my gear to retract. Even in my lightly powered Arrow it takes a good amount of rudder to keep it straight.

FINE, can I call him out for announcing every leg when he's the only one in the pattern? :D

Lol, I guess I'm in the minority. What do you think ATC says when he calls up?

Triple 4, double charlie - does it annoy you?

Just a completely meaningless rant here, but I was returning from a xc earlier today and someone at a different airport on my home drome's frequency was doing TNGs in the pattern. "Field XYZ, Cessna triple five tango...blah blah". Every leg. Triple five tango (N number revised to protect the...

    lahso student question

On the original question, I had a similar situation during my primary training. When we briefed my solo flight plan, my CFI brought up LAHSO at one of my stops, telling me to make sure I told the tower I was a student there otherwise I would be likely to get a LAHSO clearance and have to unable...
