    Understood - thank you!

Well seen as how the Virus cruises at 140kts on 100hp... I reckon they know a thing or two about aerodynamic principles :)

    61.75 Piggyback certificate

Considering my impending Bahamas trip, a question for the seasoned instructors out here - does a US certificate issued under 61.75 need a BFR carried out with a FAA accredited FI to be valid, or is validity assessed on the basis of the BFR carried out for the original (non-US) certificate...

That would mean that say Diamond has spent 300mln on certifying the DA20, 40 and 42. I find that hard to believe!

I don't think European certification requirements are far less stringent than FAA ones (plus if they want to make money, they have to get FAA cert as well). Fact is that without any sort of market pressure (read gallon prices) US manufacturers have no incentive in changing 1950es designs, and...

I deal with Atlas Aviation in Tampa - they have ben extremely helpful. Their insurance extends to the West Indies and any point in between WI and CONUS.

    • Europe could no longer recognize FAA certificates for pilots

Actually the French are against this. They've looked at the proposed EASA IR rating, deemed it too complicated for the average private pilot (who needs to bother with airline IR stuff? ), raised the middle finger, and created a stand-alone French en-route IR. Actually it appears that after a...

So... is this the 430 beater?

If you don't have WAAS / EGNOS capability (no geometric vertical guidance) then you'll be limited to an APV Baro approach and will have to stick to the LNAV / VNAV decision altitude - as opposed to the LPV decision altitude.

So... is this the 430 beater?

Yes, EGNOS and WAAS (and the other russian and asian SBASs) work exactly the same and are mutually compatible.

So... is this the 430 beater?

We do, and EGNOS is the Euro name for WAAS :) As far as Switzerland is concerned, the objective is 70% PBN approaches by 2014 and 100% PBN by 2016, in accordance with ICAO A37-11. Then again there aren't that many IFR airports around :D

I second the bananas motion. Big advantage: they taste the same going down and coming back up.

    VFR Navigation

Experience in navigation (tool) <> experience in flying (objective). The less time you spend learning and getting experience in figuring out where you are, the more time can spend on learning how to FLY. Very few sailors nowadays go sailing with the purpose of honing their celestial navigation...

    VFR Navigation

Aviator and Navigator are two entirely different jobs. Why was the Navigator position created? So that the Aviator could concentrate on flying the plane. In the real world navigators have disappeared already a while ago because tools have come along that can do their job faster, with a lot more...

    5000hp; 6000lbs -Lycoming

Correct. But i'm willing to bet that form drag, surface drag and interface drag more than compensate especially as unlike induced drag they don't decrease with speed ^^

    5000hp; 6000lbs -Lycoming

Wouldn't that be related to aerodynamics rather than the type of engine cooling... Having said that my crap water cooled car engine burns 25l/h at 140 kts cruise (ground level :D), it pulls a lot more weight (shaped a lot less aerodynamically) than a Mooney and can run at peak power for two...
