Fresh(ish) Continental A-65 Oil Fouling Plugs/Oil Leaking from Airbox

Then maybe ask you mechanic what he thinks about switching to mineral oil and running the mess out of it for 20 hours. Might be surprised at the results:)

Fresh(ish) Continental A-65 Oil Fouling Plugs/Oil Leaking from Airbox

Good job checking resistance. Btw, Champion seems to have addressed the problem of high resistance with their newer plugs. Back to the oil issue: What about the scraper rings? I don’t know any specifics about this engine model but could a bad scraper ring cause such an issue? Also, have you...

    Taxi problem

Well I can’t get access to the video now but basically you wiggle the elevator up and down at about the mid travel position while shining a light towards the lower base of the stop bracket. If the bracket rivets are sheared you’ll notice about 1/16” movement at the lower portion of the bracket...

    Taxi problem

Excellent video Gary! Thank you sir. The bracket shown at the end of the video is exactly what I’m currently reattaching. It’s becoming a real problem area for the flight schools. I’ll try to upload a video what a loose rivet condition looks like there.

Or put a grease pencil mark on the risers and see which one doesn’t melt.

    Taxi problem

Sounds like he’s compensating with right rudder (because of a bad right brake) to overcome left braking forces. Left braking could be from a dragging condition, or simply normal left brake application. Either way it’s messed up and needs attention. Thank you fellas for the the stab...

    Taxi problem

Hey Dan, I’ve always heard of this from fellow mechanics but never actually seen one cracked myself. I currently have a 172 horizontal stab removed (sheared rivets at the elevator stop bracket) and thought it’d be an excellent opportunity to inspect for spar cracks while it’s on the bench. Do...

    Taxi problem

It’s probably pulling to the left because your right brake is shot. Possibly due to what Dan said or maybe the right brake linings are worn to the point that the caliper piston has over extended allowing fluid loss and air into the system. The disks look rough as a cob. Appears to be...

    Questions about jobs

Things have a way of working out in this business. The key is to follow your own interests. I can’t emphasize that enough. There’s plenty of ways to increase salary, if that’s your goal. Don’t worry, most FBO’s and flight schools will hire up a fresh A&P. You’ll likely work under a lead A&P or...

    Failing spark plug?

Another reason to think it may have been a high resistance plug. Bomb testers do not check for that.

    Failing spark plug?

Resistance check should not be overlooked when evaluating spark plugs.

    McCauley wheel question.

I’m at the hanger looking at linings from RAPCO and APS side by side. Both P/N are for the same application. C172 w/McCauley’s RAPCO’s are thicker and not quite as long. Both fit but I’ve had much better luck with APS for this application.

    McCauley wheel question.

I’ve run into this with the old McCauley 172’s. My guess is it’s the caliper. Just recently replaced worn disks and linings myself. Still had trouble. Actually it got worse. The magnesium calipers tend to warp, possibly from over tightening. Also slide holes and pins become worn. The combination...

Turn coordinator replacement - time required

I’ve had to pull instruments a 2nd and even a 3rd time to get to the bottom of a problem. If it’s making noise have them send it back to AQI ASAP.. This is not uncommon. They’ll make it right. Yes, customer is charged freight on the first round. Warranty shipping is sometimes covered.

Turn coordinator replacement - time required

Did you bring the airplane to them or did they have to work on location, or tow it? Any of which can add a little time for removal and again for installation. Occasionally a TC can be difficult to access but normally about .5 to remove. Figure another .5 for the A&P to call AQI, package, and...

    1965 C-150 Pre-Buy Result

Make sure they pull the overhead liner back to check for corrosion as well. It seems to be a problem area that’s easily missed.

Sounds like a coastal or salty environment. Still not too bad considering it’s age.

UPS 767 stuck in mud at BHM

Which is exactly what you’re NOT supposed to do when turning a 767. The nose gear is about 7’ behind the pilots so it always appears that you’re turning wider than actual. In tight situations it’s expected and required to use what’s referred to as Judgemental Oversteering. When oversteering, the...

UPS 767 stuck in mud at BHM

I will say, H2 doesn’t look quite as harsh on the taxi chart as in the photos. Poor vis, at night, tower closed, no HUD/EFVS. Night freight ops can be challenging, especially if dealing with fatigue.
