Apparent tachometer cable issue, what is possible/legal in the meantime before it is fixed ?

And not even all of South America :). And most countries are 220-240 volts as well (I'm originally from two of those countries). And don't get me started on power plug standards, styles, and usages… (if only every country used the Australian-style plugs you can also find in places like Argentina).

    Cessna 172 down, Broomfield colorado

As an ancient native English speaker from the heartlands of the British Empire, I'd say that "they" only implies you don't know the gender of the subject. "They went solo anyway" strikes me as reasonable English.

    How did you find aviation?

My grandfather and uncle were military pilots (RFC and RAF); my father’s friends included several military (RAF and RAAF) and GA pilots. Flying — military, commercial, or GA — was always in the air (sorry) for me back then; I don’t remember not wanting to be a pilot of some sort. One particular...

    What would you do? (Checkride)

Probably not nearly as long as it's been since I had to take calculus :)

    What would you do? (Checkride)

Hmmm. Acceleration is the first derivative of velocity (not the other way around). The first derivative of acceleration is usually called "jerk" (the rate of change of acceleration). Velocity is the integral of acceleration... and distance would be the second integral of acceleration.

    CTAF calls during instrument approach

Part of my basic instrument training nearly two decades ago was my instructor randomly asking me where I was in terms of distance and direction in relation to the airport at that moment on an approach. If I couldn't almost immediately come up with something like "five southwest" or "fifteen...

UAS Cert Question from Private Pilot

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses. To make it clear, I know a medical is not required for the Part 107 drone cert — I was just assuming I’d need a medical to do my BFR (since I had a medical for every BFR I’ve ever done so far and I’m a creature of habit :)). Really the only issue for...

UAS Cert Question from Private Pilot

The FAA seems to think I need a BFR if I do the drone cert using my existing PP-ASEL certificate, which is why I asked — I'm so rusty it'd probably take a lot longer to get back up to speed and get the drone thing via the BFR than just starting from scratch. And in the grand scheme of things, a...

UAS Cert Question from Private Pilot

Thanks! I guess when I started thinking about this I thought it'd be a good spur to getting back into active flying again, but, realistically, I'm so rusty it'd take months to get it together to pass a BFR. Plus I was vaguely thinking I'd need a medical to do the BFR, but I guess not. Given the...

UAS Cert Question from Private Pilot

I thought I'd ask this question here because there seems to be both UAS and PP-ASEL wisdom in this area… I have a PP-ASEL but haven’t flown for several years due to the usual sorts of reasons (life, mostly). I’d also like to get the FAA drone / UAS commercial certificate fairly soon (mostly for...

Do you check for bullet holes in your preflight?

A decade or more ago when I occasionally flew an SR20 out of Hayward (KHWD) we found a small bullet hole in the underside of the left wing (IIRC) of the SR20. It was theorized that it probably came from the previous flight flying a little too low over one of Mendocino County's many weed farms or...

    Cheeky Aussies

Fly enough on Southwest and you'll hear a variant of that every few months. I heard it (with suitable city changes) at least five times during 2019 I think...

Does Center ever provide vectors to final?

Seattle center definitely gave me vectors for the ILS into Arcata (KACV) the last time I flew there IFR; Oakland center also used to give me vectors to the ILS at Santa Rosa (KSTS) if I remember correctly (it's been a while).

    Gatlinburg questions

The best thing about Dollywood for me was the Dolly Parton museum -- she's a real-life saint... If you're at all interested in Country or mainstream American music in general, the museum is well worth a visit. Never mind the rides :)

    Normal Checkride Stories?

I did my PP-ASEL a little over twenty years ago now, and passed first try. All I can say is don't give up -- keep flying through the test as though you're still in the game, even if you think you've failed. My DPE was severe and ex-military, and barked and yelled and fumed and asked pointed...

Do you use flight following? if so how and when do you choose to use it?

I learned to fly — and spent a bunch of years subsequent to that — at Oakland, CA (KOAK), and just took flight following (and the rest of ATC) for granted. It was the default, even (especially!) for local sightseeing flights, and I was always glad it was there and happy to use it. Even after...

    Transistors!

My first transistor radio prominently claimed to have nine transistors in it! Real state of the art. That little radio helped spark my interest in engineering, and a little over a decade later I was co-designer of a small NMOS IC with, well, a lot more than nine transistors in it :).

    Raptor Aircraft

I grew up around boats in Australia, and have a small amount of PIC time there as well, and the meaning of the word was always pretty much the same as it is here in California. That doesn't mean it's not used differently somewhere there, but not in the circles I was a part of...

    Throttle Jockey

I loved the video (I always enjoy watching carrier landings, but my ancestors are more (Royal) Air Force than Navy (Fleet Air Arm) :)). But the scariest part for me was the taxiing right up against the starboard edge of the flight deck at the end of the video. You really have to trust the guy(s)...
