    California Hangar Property Tax

http://worldpopulationreview.com/states/property-taxes-by-state/ was where I got the numbers from for the stats. I went by memory for prop 13, but I'm double-checking now...and you're right about 1% and 2%. What I get for trusting my memory. Fixing my previous post. The fee thing...large such...

    California Hangar Property Tax

Actually, due to Prop 13, CA's property taxes tend to be on the lower side. It's one of the reasons why other taxes, like sales tax, are higher. (For reference, Prop 13 caps property tax at 1% with no more than a 2% dollar rise year-over-year, reset on the occasion of a sale. That 2% is...

All women Deltra crew flies 120 girls to NASA HQ

Ah apologies, I wasn't trying to equate this with a method of directly teaching independence of thought. It isn't. Instead, it's a gateway: pull them in so that the environment is shifted. Those other parts come later. On this we'll probably have to just disagree: I can't see how to level the...

All women Deltra crew flies 120 girls to NASA HQ

The story doesn't work unless you also include what happened to the Major. If the Major was drummed out of the service and the warrant officer coddled, maybe I'll buy that. But even then: the Major is in the position of power. The consequences for the Major should be severe. You can't mention...

All women Deltra crew flies 120 girls to NASA HQ

You misunderstood. None of the categories I found that were female majority were in positions of government leadership. Zero. By taxes I meant those in the field of dealing with taxes, not writing the tax law. We're talking about tax preparers, CPAs, auditors, collectors, advisors, etc.

All women Deltra crew flies 120 girls to NASA HQ

No disagreement on that. Men are equally prone to this. It's not a gendered thing. All that means is exactly what's happening: areas where there are serious gender skews need outreach to pull in those who haven't learned that skill yet. There's no point in having an outreach to the male in...

All women Deltra crew flies 120 girls to NASA HQ

The skill to be able to forge your own path in this way is commendable and respectable. Here's the problem, though: it's a taught skill. You noted it right in the first line. Your dad was doing more than teaching you those direct skills, but also the indirect one of being your own person. This...

B-17 Down at Bradley Int'l Airport

What the heck happened in 2013? Everything looks pretty steady, then there's that year... Is that when the tanks showed up?

    Misfueled Aerostar

Clever. I had not run into that one before. I'll give it try and add it to my tool belt.

    Misfueled Aerostar

Hanging out while fueling is nice, but many times that luxury isn't available. Not that it matters in this case. It appears the pilot was present for the fueling, if I'm reading correctly. In my case, my plane is a leaseback, so most of the fuel goes in from the club's truck automatically after...

B-17 Down at Bradley Int'l Airport

Agree, and the NTSB seems to agree that this was not the cause. I still don't see confirmation as to whether one engine or two were having power issues, as well.

B-17 Down at Bradley Int'l Airport

I don't know the B-17 fuel system exactly, but multiengine often feed only from the wing they're attached to unless crossfeed is set up. Crossfeed is, while not unusual, also not the normal configuration and wouldn't have been used on takeoff. It's also not uncommon for very large aircraft like...

B-17 Down at Bradley Int'l Airport

This is quite true for commercial flights, but not true for the flying we do. As has been stated before, on mile-by-mile basis or an hour-by-hour basis, the risk is statistically between a car and a motorcycle. Depending on exactly how you measure it. For some, this activity is not inside their...

B-17 Down at Bradley Int'l Airport

By forcing the wastegates open, the effective pressure in the cylinders is lowered. It's not the compression ratio that's directly the issue...it's the cylinder pressure and heat prior to spark. Compression ratio is just one way to increase both. The turbo is another. By pulling the turbo out of...

B-17 Down at Bradley Int'l Airport

Having flown on it and having inspected 909, I can tell you that the turbo wastegates are welded fully open. They do not have the power add of the turbos, as those have been disabled, probably due to the lack of high test gas.

B-17 Down at Bradley Int'l Airport

I've flown on that aircraft. This makes me very sad. Rest in peace, passengers, pilots, airplane. Currently reporting 5 fatal, 14 total casualties (one on the ground). Severe burns, unsurprisingly. Early reports are an engine power loss at around 800', return to the airfield. There, the plane...

I am a ground vehicle worker and I made a big mistake

I'll admit that I haven't. Oh well, it was a thought. What is your preference?

I am a ground vehicle worker and I made a big mistake

Hey, you got brake and break right. Chock and chalk are kinda minor in comparison... Do NOT skip the hearing protection. Take it from someone with a serious hearing loss: that's not something you want to live with. Instead, if your company allows it, consider something like this...

    Aerospace Logic not answering calls?

I installed a digital fuel gauge in my aircraft, FL202D. I wasn't particularly impressed with the company. My A&P had much trouble getting a hold of them to answer installation questions stemming from an inadequate mx manual. Also, we never did get a straight answer on how to integrate the...

Garmin G5s for VFR flight only

Agree. I was finding that on my 172 I was replacing a vacuum pump each year or so and overhauling one gyro instrument. The plane flies 400-500 hours each year. The G5s in the plane now have been rock solid and four hours of battery each really is a great peace of mind. Vacuum gyros...I trust...
