Q - How a Flying Club Works for an Owner

O-ring was all labor. And a guess on my part...it was done with a bunch of squawks and wasn't broken out. So I just doled out dollars to everything to make it add up. My totals add up, but there's some guessing on individual items. I'm allowed to do preventative mx, too. Club allows it, but the...

Q - How a Flying Club Works for an Owner

I realized I hadn't updated it in a while, so I brought my squawks page up to current. https://n194sp.wordpress.com/n194sp/squawks/ Read that if you want a sense of what breaks and what needs fixing as an owner. Admittedly, this is a compressed timeframe, as my plane flies 400+ hours every...

Q - How a Flying Club Works for an Owner

This. This is all true. I should have been clearer in my post. Here's some things to note, @Shane C : You will not make money. It will likely be a less expensive than owning outright, but it will be more expensive than renting. It has a risk of being far more expensive. First years are...

Q - How a Flying Club Works for an Owner

I have a few years experience with leaseback now. Generally, don't worry about the students. Worry about the CFI. The students will echo and mirror the treatment that the CFI exhibit. I've had good luck so far. It's been with two organizations, one of which was primarily marketed as a school...

    Add second GPS

If you're referencing my suggestion that GPS not be shared, I was being specific to GPS. VOR and LOC antennas are passive and the splitter is passive. It can fail, but we're talking about a small number of big parts and big cables and big signals. GPS isn't quite like that, as I know you're well...

    Add second GPS

There exist splitter systems, as noted above. But... I'd seriously consider not doing that. Unlike your other antennas on the plane, the GPS one is active, not passive. There's electronics in the antenna itself and those electronics fail. If you're sharing, all your satnav fails when the...

    Tax deductible ?

You're in a gray zone. Definitely need professional representation any time you involve a plane and business, especially one where the plane is incidental instead of core. People do it, but the IRS got serious a while back about this sort of thing that has the optics of a dodge (even if it...

    Lost My Bravoginity Today

Nice. I'm doing a solo currency flight out of KPAO on Saturday. Your story has me considering taking my 172 into KSFO. Wait, never mind, just looked up the minimum landing fee. Makes KMSP look reasonable at $90. KSFO wants $261 for a wheel touch. And that's assuming I don't end up being forced...

    Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020

As a software engineer by trade, I can tell you with certainty that the US (and the SF Bay Area) is still the global leader for developing quality software. Yeah, this one isn't made here. Yes, the French have a strong software industry. Doesn't touch ours. Doesn't mean we can't lose it and that...

    Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020

I work for the damn company and still can't get a copy! They're holding this one close. I have high hopes.

    Wheel broke into half

SJC, being an international Charlie, runs significantly higher for most service than the surrounding airports. Also, the mechanics are happier working a JetA burner, so I would expect longer times for the stuff they're less familiar with. You were kinda stuck, though, as you broke and were...

    G5 question

...unless your AP is attitude-based and not compatible with the G5. Then you still need your AI to drive it and it's the TC that goes away if you want dual.

    I should know this... MEL

Yes, of course. It was a bit of hyperbole. Anything can fail and I do not rely on these gauges any more than I relied on the originals. I still stick the tanks. I still use time as my primary measure of endurance. These are not a way to get an extra few miles out of a tank. But...it's still...

Which fuel tank sensor type should I get?

Interesting. Looks like a knock-off of the CiES sensor. Same tech, similar design. Wonder if it's licensed or if the patent expired. Same price, even. I've been very happy with my CiES sensors (and just wrote another post on them in another thread, coincidentally).

    I should know this... MEL

I had both senders (one twice) and the gauge fail on my 172. The gauge...the needle fell off. The FREAKIN' NEEDLE FELL OFF. How does that even happen?!? After that, I gave up on stock Cessna garbage parts. I'm assuming the Grumman isn't much better in this regard. I went with CiES senders and a...

    New aerial obstacle

That is both entirely accurate and utterly failed to answer any of your questions. Reading comprehension is not strong with them, I guess.

    Two VFR ATC questions-

One or the other should be regulatory on ending flight following...either it must be "squawk VFR" or "keep your beacon code". I've heard both and neither. Sounds like if you don't hear it, you may squawk 1200, but should only ever keep your code if told to do so. I'm guessing from the controller...

    California Hangar Property Tax

Huh, you're right. Never noticed it before, as I've never sold a house: the seller pays it. I've only bought houses. 0.1% Go figure. I do pay $130 in recording fees.

    California Hangar Property Tax

County stamp thing is new one to me. Sales tax on a home sale...don't have that one here! That's a little crazy. I close on a house on Monday. Closing costs were a very reasonable 0.5% of the price.

Video: Flying to the Monterey Aquarium

I'll watch the video in full later, but that is indeed my plane in the background! Not me flying, though...it's a leaseback so it would have been one of the renters. Certainly been to Del Monte several times and they've always treated me well. Always a car available, too.
