    Non certified equipment in aircraft

Afaik, feds are not allowed inside your airplane during ramp checks unless you invite them. besides, you have to be a lucky person to be ever ramp-checked flying a small GA piston airplane.

    Condor Retread

Don't remember where it was, something about a used tube being stretched out too much to be re-installed correctly. Like re-using a crush washer - you can get away with it most but it's not right

    Grade A Cotton?

In fact, some new airplanes were covered with cotton at the factory. I know of one -- in the 80-s Aviat had problems with adhesion of syntetic fabric and produced a batch of airplanes covered with cotton. Check this out http://www.biplaneforum.com/showthread.php?t=8555

Maintenance shop wants to add markup on the work of prop / engine shop! Is this normal?

Aviation mechanics have to be poor. It's the only way to overcome the liability. They won't sue if you got nothing to lose :)

    Savings of Owner assisted maintenance

I' curious how that compares to car wheel bearings? If car wheel goes off the consequences are as bad as for the airplane but nobody inspects wheel bearing on cars...

    Savings of Owner assisted maintenance

Well, it makes perfect sense if he's always flying 75% of power of more (otherwise 172 is too slow) and never higher than 3500 (and it does take time to climb that high in 172!). As long as he leans on the ground :)

    Convert O-360 to IO-360?

would be much interesting to convert IO-360 to IO-390. I heard Monti Barret could do it. Is it like simply sticking IO-580 cylinders on the IO-360 crankcase or there is more involved? That's the question

life insurance for pilots - worth it?

Last time I checked life insurances (AIG and transamerica? i think about 10y ago) they did not have aviation exclusion. However they want to know your dangerous activities and will price accordingly. Interestingly, aviation (including aerobatics) was not a big show stopper. But SCUBA was! It...

I bet the Archer has a solid crankshaft and the "install" fee for a CS prop would be in the vicinity of something like 20k?
