How much did poor training contribute to this accident?

Seems to me that not too long ago we had a VERY long discussion about some young lady from TN who blatantly ignored/forgot everything she was ever "taught."

Where would you move for basic aerobatic training?

I flew this morning with a -900 density altitude, too.

[rant] The really bad design thread

I have one of those, too. Not impressed compared to the old straight-tube style. I still spill more fuel out of this style than I ever do on an old straight spout. I've modified every gas can I own to have a straight spout with a vent. Fortunately the Chinese don't care about the environment...

Where would you move for basic aerobatic training?

Mike Goulian has a school up here in New England. https://mikegoulianaviation.com/ He flies almost every day to keep his skills up.

    182 Vent Plugs?

EPA has nothing on MADEP (Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection)

    Ipad on Cessna 182

Yeah, each 182 seems to have a slightly different yoke setup when it comes to clamping on. I like KYPilot's idea of going under the yoke but that doesn't work so good for me due to my height. At least not in our worn-out old bird.

    182 Vent Plugs?

Thank you all for your insight. That's kinda what I figured but wanted to make sure. In looking at the 182Q POH it appeared that both wing inlets are piped straight to the overhead vents and cabin heat comes in only through the dash but I wanted to be sure. I have a roll of aluminum tape that...

    182 Vent Plugs?

This might be a stupid question…. Can you plug the air vent ports on a Skylane’s wings for winter flying? Our club Skylane is a little beat up so none of the air vents really seal and the doors allow for some air to get through a little more than normal. In the interest of containing heat in...

    Ipad on Cessna 182

I flew a few times in a 182 with the old iPad 10.2". With our panel layout, it obscured the tach a bit but that's about it. After recently switching to the mini, I didn't really notice too much a difference except that the autopilot disconnect button is easier to hit. It was a tight squeeze...

Fatal Crash at First Flight, 9/28

I've not personally landed at FFA yet but spent enough time there and around the monument (used to live near there) to know how the weather can be...plus, my current home airfield has a tree situation not unlike FFA. I'm thinking, as alluded to before that the wind was pretty much directly from...

Fatal Crash at First Flight, 9/28

ADS-B Exchange which is entirely raw data paints a more complete picture of the moments leading to the mishap. Descent rate approximately -1200 fpm shortly after turn to final. It certainly didn't appear to be a "stable" approach but it was in a straight line all the way to the ground...

    Any Career CFI's?

Great insight from everyone...thank you. I'm giving myself the added restriction of really wanting to continue living where I am after I retire. Never would've thought a guy from south Texas would feel at home in Massachusetts (politics aside). By my best estimations, to continue living...

    Any Career CFI's?

Maybe...I was at Newport News Int'l (KPHF) back then with Rick Aviation. In 2001 they were Part 91, now they're a 141 school. The GA ramp was pretty small and shared space between Rick Aviation and Atlantic Aviation. There were many times I would walk out to the old-beater 172 parked next to...

    Any Career CFI's?

23 years ago when I initially began my flight training, most professional pilots I came in contact with had been trained by some very experienced, older CFIs from day 1 to ATP. Many times on the flight line I was encouraged by the pros to enjoy the days of basic flight training. The academies...

    Proper VFR Flight Following Call

That seems to be the accepted/expected process in the Boston airspace. That's what I've been doing lately and it seems to make the controllers happy up here.

Do you call when you're the unknown traffic

So many times we're told that flight following is "workload dependent" or similar. What I've learned while flying around the Boston airspace is that they're "working" you even when they're not talking to you. Meaning they might be vectoring aircraft around you for avoidance or restricting the...

    GPS backup

Good Question. Actually, both questions. The first being, @Lon Stratton's: why don't we just turn it back on? Almost all of the equipment has been disposed of and the towers torn down as indicated in Brad's post. This was done under the Obama administration (not making a judgement on his...

    GPS backup

It hasn't been mentioned here yet so in case we have any readers that aren't aware of the FAA's plan for VORs in the future... The FAA has stated that their intention with VORs is that at any given location in the United States, there will be a VOR that can be used in conjunction with an...

    GPS backup

After the 9/11 attacks, ATC got over 4,500 aircraft on the ground in less than 3 hours. And that was before the days of RNAV/GPS being so prevalent. As for the question at hand, I disagree that NDBs are any kind of navaid that should still be in use. Over the last 3 years, I've flown 8 or...
