Now that I have my private certificate (2 weeks ago!), I am learning how to develop the right mindset for the "fun flight" with a non-pilot passenger. This is not really something you can do with an instructor, and is a lot like the feeling of the first solo flights.
One of the first things I...
Great trip! From CUB I stopped first at Clinton-Sampson County CTZ for fuel and a break - my longest leg so far. Unfortunately I did not realize the pumps there are not self serve, and at 11am on Sunday no one was there.
After a short break, I picked Plymouth PMZ as a fuel stop. It had...
My home airport where we did the checkride out of is right by/under a class C area - also a NG airbase and an Air Force base. I always let them know what I'm doing and get a transponder code.
I am planning to make my first real XC flight with my new private pilot certificate to Manteo next weekend. I am coming from the southwest, KCUB to be precise - there are a lot of restricted areas in the way just before getting to KMQI. Are these usually active or not active? If active I'm...

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences here - it has been very helpful to read other students' stories.
It took longer to get here than I thought it would, and there were times I wasn't sure if I was really cut out to be a pilot, but I am very glad I kept at it.
I actually really...
I went through the AIM and tabbed/highlighted the maintenance times, currency requirements, required equipment, etc., and highlighted the parts that apply to me. Doing that helps me remember pretty well, so I didn't need to actually look anything up.
Absolutely. My instructor taught me to roll right every now and then in cruise to get a look at the ground over there too (low-wing airplane). Smoke and bodies of water give good indications as to wind direction on the ground.
The answer for me personally, I mean. I fly gliders, and every spring I fly with an instructor a few times when glider season starts. I probably would not crash if I went alone, but it makes me feel much calmer with a pro riding along.
