    Stall speed and gross weight

Change in weight affects airspeed at which a given AOA is reached.

    First Solo Boo Boo

Yes. You disagreed with the statement that sometimes it’s better not to add power if losing directional control on landing. You called the idea “ridiculous.”

    First Solo Boo Boo

I don’t mean anyone should accept a crash - but I do think there is a point where it would be more dangerous to attempt a go around. Depending on the circumstances. That’s the basic idea my instructor was trying to get across.

    Nervous about flying

I get a real feeling of joy once I get into cruise, and an intense sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when I stop the engine at the end of the flight. You just have to get used to being up there and your brain will eventually tune out the anxiety.

    First Solo Boo Boo

If you’re already below 45 kts, it might be better not to go around if you are losing directional control. One of my instructors said “sometimes it’s better not to add energy to an already bad situation.” My personal thoughts are, once my plane has slowed below flying speed, I’m probably going...

Cherokee 140 w/ 160hp STC VS Warrior. Differences?

After 100+ hours in my Hershey bar 140, I have realized that with full flaps it really starts dropping once you get below 65mph, right about where the green arc ends on the ASI. Stall speed is 55mph but descent rate increases significantly below 65. Add a little power, no problem.

    Bird Encounter

In gliders I often get pretty close to soaring birds here in SC. I think they’re buzzards. They’re really good at soaring and are usually in the dead center of a thermal. They dive away when they hear the glider.

    SCBC

Breakfast Club is a great group and a very good reason to do a cross country. Lots of cool airplanes there, sometimes even warbirds, etc. too.

Started building CH750 STOL rudder kit

I used duplicolor self etching primer from the auto parts store, just on the mating surfaces. It can’t possibly add that much weight.

Shock cooling - and related damage. is it a myth?

I baby my engine and do my best to respect it. I generally try to plan ahead and reduce power slowly for a smooth 500 fpm descent. No danger of 'shock cooling' there, and it's easy on the plane, pilot and passengers. But if I need the plane to come down more quickly for some reason, so be it.

    Losing one's confidence

Yes, I have absolutely felt the same way! It's all about managing anxiety. Flying more is the only cure that I am aware of. Go up with an instructor and do some short cross countries, pattern work, whatever. Or go with just another current private pilot. The more I fly, the better-equipped I...

I’ll try blowing from ASI, thanks.

    Pitot system problem

PA-28-140. On takeoff roll yesterday my ASI was dead. Aborted at rotation speed. Blowing into the pitot did nothing at the indicator. I put a little heater under the left wing and left for a couple hours. When I got back, when I blew into the pitot the ASI would indicate airspeed, quickly...

    Lost focus in the flare

I bounced a PW-5 glider once. Thankfully it was on grass. There's no go around option. The first hit was a surprise, the second hit was an even bigger surprise. Somehow I kept the stick back and got out of the PIO after the second impact.

    Ground injuries

I am trying to find statistics regarding non-passengers injured on the ground by GA plane crashes. In other words, someone crashing into a house, car, etc. and injuring someone on the ground. Any insight would be appreciated.

    Want To Buy Camera setup

I am looking for a GoPro-style cockpit camera setup. If anyone got some new gear for Christmas and wants to unload the old stuff let me know!

Started building CH750 STOL rudder kit

So last night I bought a couple Burro Brand sawhorses, and two pieces of 1-inch edge glued pine board about 6 feet long. It is sturdy enough for the tail and probably slats/flaperons. It can be beefed up with some more work but was perfect for the tail, and only took 20m to build. Got rear...

    2017 in Review

Got private certificate in May. Flew to OBX for vacation and did some beach flying there. Lots of local shorter hops. Grass strips. Flights with friends, father-in-law, brother-in-law, my mother, and my daughter. Two-year-old son says "I wan go fly aypain dada." Crosswinds. www.flyscbc.com...

Started building CH750 STOL rudder kit

Finished riveting the skeleton together tonight after about 5-6 total hours of work. I chose to prime the mating surfaces with Duplo self-etching primer from the auto parts store. Setting up the air riveter took about 10 minutes and it is very easy to use. The riveting is the reward for the prep...
