5 related adults dead in Cessna 340 crash

I have seen a lot of comments that this takeoff was legal due to being Part 91 yet not one mention of the little black "T" triangle on the approach plates so I looked it up. Appears there are only Takeoff Obstacle Notes for KBOW so the takeoff was in fact legal. That being said, I'm in the camp...

    Part Time Airline Pilots

That and the Pilot's union. I suspect they would fight any attempt to introduce part time pilots into the system.

    Part Time Airline Pilots

Do the regionals and/or majors have part time pilots that fly only as needed to fill gaps in the schedules due to sickness, vacations, ect.?

What engine is more reliable a piston Helicopter or a single engine airplane?

This thread got me looking at helo crashes. Tail rotor strikes seems like a common problem.

What engine is more reliable a piston Helicopter or a single engine airplane?

You would be surprised by how many helicopter accidents are in the NTSB data base every month. They are inherently more complex to operate and I believe they are significantly more to insure.

    Last US Carrier 747 Flight

The age of 4 engine passenger jets is essentially over. Fortunately for Boeing, they made a cargo variant of their 747-8. Airbus wishing they had one for the 380.

    New Cessna Aircraft - SkyCourier

What purpose do these short flights serve for Fed Ex/UPS? At first glance, it would appear that these trips are too short to make a significant difference in time and you can haul more for less with a truck then with these smaller planes. I know Fed Ex has a Caravan that flies at night from...

A cautionary tale on aircraft sales contracts

Having the losing party pay legal fees isn't anything out of the ordinary in a contract and is built into the legal system of some other countries. I would guess just about everyone has signed a contract, loan or mortgage that contained a provision like this. Heck, when you get...

What's It really Like To Be A CFI?

Sorry to hear that. Definitely one of the negatives of being a CFI is the game of chicken you play as you let the student takes things to the brink before intervening. In regard to the accident, I am assuming it was the one at (TOP) this past July. From what I have read, the Twin Comanche (PA...

What's It really Like To Be A CFI?

Commercial/Instrument rated, now considering getting my CFI rating. I have a law practice so it would be as a part time instructor. Looking for some general comments from the CFIs out there about the positives and negatives of the job.

    Back in the game

Congrats, that beats the 24 years I was away by quite a bit. It's like being transported into the future with the GPS systems, glass cockpits, electronic flight bags and online resources.

Instrument Training: Who got training from their CFII in actual IMC?

I was fortunate to get a lot of actual during my training including over 4 hours in two cross countries we did at the end. It was a great way to wrap things up and gave me the confidence to fly in actual with my wife on my first IFR flight after getting my license. It's a shame that there are...

American Made - Tom Cruise new movie

I thought the casting of Cruise was kind of odd. Actually thought a bigger guy that looked more like Seal would have made a better choice. That being said, I'm ok with Cruise the actor and look forward to seeing this movie after really enjoying the Cocaine Cowboys documentary. For those that...

GPS or Vloc VOR DME approach on checkride

So fly it GPS and monitor the VOR on nav 2 seems like the best way to go. Thanks for the input, your reference to the AIM change puts these comments in better context. Since the rule is only for VOR, TACAN or NDB, it is clear you must use the localizer in VLOC for ILS or Localizer approach...

GPS or Vloc VOR DME approach on checkride

I would like to revisit this discussion. The OP talks about timing as an option on this approach however many VOR/DME approaches are based solely off distance and there is no timing chart. In such a case, obviously you must use distance. To utilize the GPS as a DME substitute, would you enter...

5 killed in Bloomington crash (Cessna 414)

Talk about a difficult situation, after being awake for 18 hours he was dealing with low IFR at night on a non precision approach. I only read parts of the report, was a fuel estimate noted? If the tanks were low, certainly would of limited his options and made a bad situation worse.

    Some Rotting Planes

A very old buck was proud to show me his Seabee; appeared to have been a long time since it has been flown. Can't be too many of these left, only produced 1946-47. Told me he had several offers to buy over the years but refused. Kind of a shame because this one looks like a good candidate for...
