When our flying club bought a new-to-us plane it came with an engine with 0SMO from one stop in oceanside. 5 years later we are at 2600 hours and have not had any problems with the engine. We have not ever dealt with them but are satisfied with the engine. Just another data point.

I land power off in my Pitts which has an io-540. When I pull the power to idle it makes all sorts of pops. Everyone says its normal.

If the tower is closed then it can be a problem. The tower is open much longer these days.

I fly out of HHR. As others have mentioned you could have just ask for the RNAV and they will say yes. The localizer usually will get you in and the path of the RNAV is identical. Hawthorne operates with a waiver due to it's proximity to LAX. If it's low IFR at LAX and HHR tower is closed...

Local here.... you can file IFR and the clearance is not so complicated. Don't worry about a long wait those don't seem to happen often. So delays not a big deal. Clearances straight forward. Park in the city ramp in front of the abandoned restaurant. Make sure to file your landing fees...

I am based at KTVL. You will have no problem getting an uber to get to heavenly. Should be around 30 bucks to the cal base lodge. There are taxis too but they typically charge double.
