Icon A5.. another crash Jul 27

I used to fly Cessna 150 in Albuequerque, on days when DA was about 9,000 with instructor, above 10,000 solo. The gross is 1600 lbs on the same 100 hp, so a little worse than Icon A5. Performance was quite marginal and required long shallow climbs. Would not be possible in presence of any steady...

Do they teach correct patterns any more?

Of course. But it's more satisfying to "teach" the other guy "a lesson". And look what kind of impression that CFI left on the narrator at PoA, his student.

Do they teach correct patterns any more?

I learned to fly at a Charlie. Still hate stupid Deltas that just waste taxpayer funds for no reason. That, and ferrying an airplane with a broken radio from New York to Texas. Thanks god the Deltas haven't overtaken all of the country just yet.

No, we're not, and Ron explained it to you why. You then pretended to agree, and immediately continued spewing your hat... er... continued making the same point you did for a dozen messages already.

Tall pilot roll call (6'5"+), advice for a beginner

I'm 6'5" and I'm mostly fine in a 150L or later, with the exception of the usual craning of the neck, which I have to do in all basic high-wing airplanes. The 150L came out in 1973 and brought lower seats.

Deltahawk - a modern GA engine

It's very much in line with the prices for e.g. SMA diesels. I remember back in 2000s those were going to $40k. They are pushing $100k now. Well, of course, an SMA is more powerful than Deltahawk, and it's made in France (although Conti licensed them recently).

Deltahawk - a modern GA engine

Deltahawk has been this close to realization for so long that it became a legend in aviation, in a bad way. It's interesting that the 2019 iteration seems significantly reworked from the 2005 originals with blind cylinders. Before, the cylinders were machined from a cast, including the heads...

Icon A5.. another crash Jul 27

Nope, not yet. Working against the current sales rate, idiot pilots need to crash 50 A5 per year for them to become rarer. Mere 5 crashes ain't doing squat for that.

Actually... flying into the wind makes your climb steeper against the ground objects, such as trees, than flying with the wind [1]. Of course, there's no difference against the moving air. [1] As long as you're climbing, of course. If you are not gaining altitude, flying into the wind merely...

Yes. Much easier than my airplane actually. It has blow-out window panels that are wider than my shoulders. It's necessary because it has a tip-up canopy, which may be impossible to open if one flips it in a shallow water.

Very much reminded me of this -- same effect of a tree line, which a less experienced pilot didn't anticipate:

    Death of the Corvette

I'm sure it's coming to that, BMW has phased out manuals from the mainstream line-up. Just not yet. But pretty soon the only manual cars will be MX-5, GT86 (if it lives long enough), Civic Type R, and Wrangler. Speaking of which, one annoying part of the manual transmission that we don't hear...

Grumman Tiger, good bad and ugly

My first was $640, 2nd was $830 on the Mooney. Unfortunately, 3rd looks like $7,000 or thereabouts, because we found corrosion and replacing the stringers. So, it varies.

Tall pilot roll call (6'5"+), advice for a beginner

At 6'6" I am noticeably shorter than you are, although I'm somewhat familiar with the issues. I fly a Mooney M20E, which is okay, but borderline. 2 more inches may be prohibitive for you, depending how you're built (my inseam is 36"). I think your best bet is a 182 and then modify the seat by...

    Cirrus killer?

Indeed, this is why I have a Mooney: I needed them knots more than I needed the ease of entry. Still, if I needed a coast-to-coast plane on a budget, I'd be looking at C310.

    Cirrus killer?

Ease of boarding is an important consideration, and rather than a Cirrus, I see a 182 in your future. We all are getting there.

    European GPS is down

A good enough SDR receiver does it all in software anyway. It cannot receive signals that are too far away from a center frequency, but otherwise it's completely flexible. So, a phone chipset with 3 identical SDR blocks on its ASIC can receive GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo simultaneously. Heck, all...
