    Flying across departure/upwind leg

OK, I need to vent some steam about the following. Last Saturday, after the mini-fly-in at KJVL, my friend and I got into the Archer to fly back to 06C. We asked for FF, were handed off to RDF approach, and finally to Chicago approach. There was another aircraft on FF at the time, approaching...

    trainie

Overheard on the GND frequency of a class-D near Chicago that will remain anonymous to protect the innocent and the clueless: - Ground, NCC1701 at the ramp with Bravo, VFR departure to Kilo-something. - NCC1701, Ground, runway .., via ... Bravo-something, cross 2-2. - (some FBO) truck 2, to...

    Help me ID this airplane

This photo was taken in 1972 or 1973 at LGKM (now defunct), in Greece. It's my uncle Ted, holding me while standing on the strut of what? Any help will be appreciated. It's a high-wing tail-dragger, but what is it? My first guess was Statiowagon, but the engine cowling and propeller look too...

    KJVL - Bessie's Dinner

Planning wheels up from 06C at 9:30 AM. Bringing my friend Eric for the ride. At least one of us will be wearing an orange hat with a ham radio call sign. Looking forward to meeting a fellow CSU alumn.

Stupid things I say to controllers

On one occasion I have responded to a controller with a QSL. Another time, instead of "say again please?", I blurted out a "QRZ?". Once I came close to ask to QSY to approach but I managed to say the right thing. And to my amazement, I have yet to say 73 prior to switching frequency nor have I...

Stupid things I say to controllers

You're trying to make me feel better about it, aren't you? Thanks :) Did I mention that I was landing on the left parallel runway? With traffic in and out the right one? I looked towards the tower and I could see the controller's eyes rolling: did this guy just ask to confirm left traffic...

Stupid things I say to controllers

Occasionally, and very rarely, of course, I catch myself saying totally stupid things to ATC. Like earlier today when I was practicing touch and goes at KDPA after the tower cleared me for the option on runway 20L, while several other aircraft were been sequenced in and out of 20R. Flying Ace...

    Battery for Scout ADSB

I use this [Amazon link] with my Scout, to keep it independent from other gadgets in the cockpit that require charging (like my cheap GoPro knock-off that needs to be on external power after the first 30 minutes of recording). At $12, I thought it was a good deal (the battery pack, not the...

Have any of y'all done this? Anyone found any surprises?

I did two test, the National Geographic and 23 & Me. According to 23 & Me, I am: 31% Balkan (Greek) 28% Italian (that was a WTF moment) 16% Askenazi 21% Western Asian (probably refugees from Asia Minor) That Italian component took me by surprise. No one in the family spoke about that...

Wile E Coyote on the airport (with pics)

But have no fear for the smarter deer as you shear through the atmosphere as a flying gondolier retracting your landing gear closer to the stratosphere.

Wile E Coyote on the airport (with pics)

    That's preposterous! ADSB-Out would be sufficient. :D

Wile E Coyote on the airport (with pics)

There is a "resident" coyote near the departure end of runway 29 at 06C. He hides in the tall grass east of the runway, but comes out often to take the sun and watch the traffic this time of the year.

    Helicopter flight

He is, isn't he? He is ignoring second-order effects and other non-linearities, and his approach assumes a uniform gravity field, no gravometric perturbations, and a cosmological constant at a value Λ<1, which we all know is impossible.

    Helicopter flight

Today I went up in a helicopter for the first time. A friend who flies helicopters returned the favor after I took him on a couple of flights on the airplane with me. Here's the summary of my experience flying in a 'copter: someone, woke up one day and thought, hmmm, let me design a flying...
