    Update on Catalina Baron crash

Ari hits it with #2, above. WIth a bad battery, you pull up the gear and it doesn't go- it won't retract on just the 65A alternator. It needs the battery reserve. With an inductive motor load and little battery storage, you get immediate <11.2 V, and nothing happens except- all the intruments...

Moving from Class III to Class II with SI?

Setup a new medical, with your new data (CPAP use since last issued, OSA recert sheet), and find an AME who will call the agency to get a verbal. You leave with a certificate, and the new auth will arrive and say {second} or {first} class as appropriate.

Not to be pedantic, but "can you say PAVE"? Factors: Pilot Aircraft enVironment Extenal pressures It's so very lame but so very true. Every item gets continuous re-assessment. The problem remains, the "Abstract risk" vs. the Known Benefit of proceeding. The PIC must have known as the...

Moving from Class III to Class II with SI?

Matthew, you don't need a second class to take the commercial checkride, only qual enough to be PIC- and you have that. The AME is supposed to call the FAA on a new exam, when you have the documentation for a verbal auth, for 2nd as your AASI is written for 3rd class. However know that the...

    Adderall & The FAA

You can't certify on Adderall, or with any sort of live Rx. No pilots don't get a way with doing coke for very long. You are mistaken. It's a long road but you will not make it this cycle, they just don't give you enough time. Drop me an email from my byline link (If it's not displayed...go...

    Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty/eye pressure

It is self verifying. It show you the same dot 4 times in 4 different brightnesses. If you get the middle bright ones, but miss the bright one, they know your eye was wandering. I can't teach you that here on a webboard. What does the ophthalmologist doc think of it?

Dehydration syncope - Should I fly?

Do EVERYTHING ahead of the AME visit. If all is well and the testing makes "standards" the AME CAN (doesn't have to) issue in the office, and send it all in for second guessing.

How much did poor training contribute to this accident?

Not that many moons ago I had an MEI transition student who took a phone call in a 45 degree banked turn at 3,500 ft. I took the aircraft and returned to base. On rollout, I told him, "you need to find a new CFI". "Why is that?" sez he. "Because I am never going to sign you off" and I sent him...

How much did poor training contribute to this accident?

THIS. But, I'm afraid in reality it's "Acceptable Losses" (borrowed from the JAA chair at the time of the Lubitz accident).
