    IFR

I don't like double-dipping like you suggest. Three hours of night is not much and I believe you should get the experience visually. As has been said, your hood time with the CFI will count toward the private but not toward "instrument flight instruction" required for an IFR rating. However...

Recommend android tablet for Garmin Pilot?

Thanks for the tip, but I'm not finding that. I have 7.0 and my software is supposedly up to date.

Recommend android tablet for Garmin Pilot?

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 with 32 GB of memory, which is not enough. The tablet handles FlightPln Go just fine.

Recommend android tablet for Garmin Pilot?

I only fly 40-60 hrs/yr so like the fact that FlightPln Go is free. Any ideas how to have that access the SD card directly?

2nd Time around...the pattern (My Commercial Checkride story)

I too screwed up the power-off 180, making my downwind a little too far out and then not turning base soon enough. As soon as I turned base I could see I'd screwed the pooch and said so and where I would put down if it were a real engine failure. The examiner did not fail me. On my CFI ride I...

Recommend android tablet for Garmin Pilot?

For those of you using Samsung Galaxy Tab with a supplemental memory card, is there any way to access charts, etc. that are on the card without manually moving them to the internal storage, after first moving something to the SD card to make space? I have 32 GB of internal storage and that...

    Cessna 172rg crosswind

What does the POH say? Lot's of people, even experienced, have trouble with crosswinds. Have you pushed the envelope yourself? ----if not, suggest that as a first step.

What airplane is overall better Bonanzas or Mooneys

Parasitic drag goes up as speed squared, power required goes up as speed cubed (ignoring the effect of induced drag).

Flying into Vail (KEGE) from the Southeast

Let me add, this is one of the most spectacular trips you will ever take.

Flying into Vail (KEGE) from the Southeast

Never flown to Eagle, but to Aspen from Austin a number of times. Head up to the vicinity of Trinidad, CO, then over the pass just west of La Veta (around 9000'). Then up the Saguache Valley and over North Pass (10149') to Gunnison. Fly west and then northwest over the highway to Grand...

Has anybody had or known somebody who had a elevator/stabilator cable snap in flight?

A more important reason to not use flaps would be that no flaps gives a flatter approach path and less attitude change required to flare and land---easier to manage with trim and power and better likelihood of a good outcome.

    Scared of my instructor

Most Americans have never made a serious effort to become fluent is another language. Many who speak English as a second language and appear to be fluent, are actually struggling when interacting with someone who doesn't appreciate their limitations. This instructor may be one of those people...

    Need to share the cost?

If the plane and pilot are being supplied by the same person or company, it's Part 135. Think through how it would look in the hearing if something happened or it were reported to the FAA, and then decide.

    Debonair

I had a '65 C33 with IO-470K and loved it. This was back in the '80's. Flew it TX-SC many times and all over CO. Traded up to an A36 and loved that too, but it wasn't as sweet flying as the Deb. Couple of years ago had the chance to instruct a student who'd bought a Deb and it reminded me...

    Tailwheel training...ideal world question

When I was learning in '75-76, in Cherokee 140s, my instructor made me land like I was flying a taildragger---aligned with runway, no drift, full stall. When I got my PPL, I transitioned to the FBO's brand new 1977 Super Cub with little difficulty. I've flown with higher time pilots who weren't...

    Android or IPad

Agree with Aeromot. I fly about 60 hrs./yr and stay IFR current. My Samsung Tab S2 and FlightPlan Go work well for me. FltPln has some quirks you have to master, but it's a good platform.

Strong Gusty Headwind + Me = Too Much Float - HOW TO IMPROVE?

Good discussion. I always use full flaps, but I'll try to address the logic of using less. With less flaps, you will be at a higher pitch attitude (less nose down) than with full flaps. You can "drive it on" (we're talking tricycle LG here) at a higher margin above stall, retaining better...

At what point to pilots stop flying IFR

I'm 70 and have no intention of giving up IFR any time soon. As long I can keep up with clearances, ATC communications, situational awareness, etc., I'll keep at it. When I no longer feel confident, I'll revert to VFR only. That said, most of my IFR flying is to remain current and my actual...

    Dual Instruction Requirements

One key point relevant to the OP's question and not clear from the above responses is that 15 hours of dual instruction for the instrument rating must be from an "authorized instructor", i.e., a CFII. There is an additional requirement of a minimum of 40 hours of "actual or simulated instrument...
