    Night flying

Be very careful at night flying into runways without VASI/PAPI. My rule is to be at 400' AGL rolling out on final in a standard traffic pattern and to make a steeper than normal descent from there.

Hold in lieu of procedure turn

Holding is part of the requirement for instrument currency. This is likely the most common reason for flying the HILPT. Almost every time I do it, I have to ask for it.

Lost log book woes : (

You didn't complete the PPL and haven't flown in 33 years? Just start over, you haven't lost much.

    Let the crazy begin...

If you really want to accelerate things by doing more than 1.5/day, do one lesson in the morning and one in the afternoon. As for using two instructors, it can be helpful to be exposed to slightly different ways of doing things, and different teaching techniques, but be aware that Instructor A...

    It it all worth it?

I'd like to address those who won't get and instrument rating because they won't stay proficient. I've had the rating since 1979 except for 6 years overseas---that's 33 years of flying. I've averaged about 60 hours/yr over that time, which is probably about average for a recreational pilot...

Brenham Texas Airport Restaurant is open

Here's a link that I believe is recent: http://www.brenhammunicipalairport.com/index_files/Page437.htm It says they're open Fri-Mon, 11-3. I'd call to verify before going. Haven't been since they re-opened but hope to go soon.

    Airport Fences

Extensive fencing has been added around San Marcos Regional (KHYI). If someone wanted to get inside, it wouldn't be difficult. The main effect as far as I can see is to make the airport more unfriendly to the general public. Not exactly what GA needs.

    Newbie

When I started to fly in 1975 airplanes generally didn't have intercoms and no one used headsets. When I installed an intercom in my Debonair in 1983, it was a revelation. Many years later I upgraded to ANC (David Clark) and it was another step change in flying quality, though not as great as...

    Stormscopes, how useful?

Several have commented that spherics is no substitute for radar. Really, in a SE plane? What does radar cost, and how effective is the little antenna that is fitted to a SE wing? I am really asking, as I have no experience. With spherics, attenuation is not an issue and you have a 360 degree...

    Stormscopes, how useful?

I wouldn't want to take long trips in the South without it. I've had both Stormscope and StrikeFinder and swear by them both. Stormscope or radar? I've never flown with radar in a single engine aircraft but based on what I've read, I'll take Stormscope (or SF) over the small antenna radar...

    ADS-B vs Flight Following

Note that you're using the term "controlled airspace" loosely. ADSB-out will be required, basically, in airspace where Mode C is required now. There is a world of Class E controlled airspace where ADSB will not be required. Don't know about Long Island.

    Why did the Concorde fail?

To put the Concorde's safety record in perspective, I recall reading that the 737 fleet makes more takeoffs and landings in one week than the Concorde did in its history. The Paris crash showed it was a fragile design.

    Angel flights

Changes in the tax law may affect deductibility. The standard deduction doubles and some deductions are limited. While it won't affect my Angel Flight participation, I personally will no longer be able to deduct (i.e., the standard deduction will be more than the allowed itemized deductions)...

87-year-old pilot dies after plane crashes into trees at Bolivar golf course

I hope he wasn't on Basic Med and they determine the crash was due to a medical problem.

    Just curious....

The intercom and headset are the greatest advance in aviation since, I dunno, the enclosed cockpit. Installed in my '65 Debonair in '83 and never looked back.

Co-owners: how do you handle scheduling?

Google calendars, first come, first served. Meeting early in the year to resolve any important conflicts (July 4 week, Thanksgiving, Christmas most common) and have a few beers. No more than three events on the calendar per person at one time (e.g., can't schedule every weekend in deer season...
