Can I treat a bicycle as a CFI business expense?

You can deduct anything until the IRS says "no". You can make a good case for its deductibility, so probably worst case it would be disallowed in an audit. All in all, pretty small potatoes.

[NA] Weird new credit card fraud thing? [/NA]

Too bad about the Eighth Amendment. Caning as in Singapore would seriously cut down on this type of crime.

    Texas Ocassional Sale [Tax Exemption?]

My experience was some years ago, but the above posts are correct. I would call the tax office (they are helpful) and determine what documentation you may need if they come after you at some time in the future. BTW, if you do have to pay sales tax in Texas, it's the 6.25% state part and...

    What are you flying?

Not at all. When we had the A36 my wife preferred the rear-facing seats. There, she couldn't see the weather ahead. Seriously, those seats are quite comfortable and with only two people in the four rear seats, they can sit diagonally from each other, put their feet up, and really get comfortable.

CO poisoning - Time of useful consciousness

If you're ROP, go LOP immediately. No, I have no data but it seems like a common sense thing to do.

    Aviation Books

"Moondog's Academy of the Air and Other Disasters" by Peter Fusco is funny enough to bring tears to your eyes. In addition to being hilarious it's a view into the underside of the aviation world. In the same vein, "Hauling Checks" by Alex Stone is good but not as funny.

    WTF is Gross Weight?

I don't know the answer to the original question, but I suspect none of the above is correct either. A guess: Gross weight is the weight of the fueled and loaded aircraft and MTOW is with external armaments.

Car gas and Av Gas basically the same price in LA

Yes, avgas costs some more to make and distribute than mogas (auto gas). However, the main driver of higher avgas prices is the limited competition at the retail (FBO) level, compared to gas stations on every corner competing with each other.

Shopping for a watch any suggestions

For the past dozen years or so I've worn a Seiko dive watch. It has a rotating bezel useful for tracking elapsed time for diving, fuel switching, cooking, etc. The downside is it's too thick to wear with long sleeves, or at least I don't.

    G100UL unleaded avgas approved

I'm wondering why the STC route. Seems like a simpler way, and less open to cheating, would have been to charge the refiners a royalty, possibly time-limited rather than open ended.

Can I let someone fly my airplane for expenses?

Be aware that there's a difference between Named Pilot and Covered Pilot. In the first case, you are covered as policy holder but the Named Pilot is not. In the event of an accident, the insurance company may try to recover their loss from the Named Pilot. That's called subrogation and a...

    Checkride without Foreflight?

Don't need GPS for a check ride. Just be sure you're familiar with the charts, landmarks, local navaids, etc. Plan your flight, fly your plan (until the DPE intervenes). Make sure you know how to use all the equipment you have, including VOR nav radios.

    Engine Failure on Takeoff

Here's John Deakin's take on this, in Pelican's Perch #19: "My pet peeve in climbs is using too low an airspeed. One famous training organization insists on using 95 knots to 1,000 feet AGL in a Bonanza, most of the twin operators push for a climb at or near the blue line, and virtually all the...

LODA - Could not be simpler - nor quicker.

Seems to me this whole discussion is missing one big point: a court ruled that flight instruction is carrying persons for hire. The FAA accepted that. What makes us think that logic only applies to experimentals, warbirds, etc.? Think about the definition creep of "compensation". This has...

But drop-in replacement is what GAMI believe they have achieved. If not, it's for naught. We already have a partial replacement in 94UL.
