    Vmc Roll

That is very scary. I got my MEI in about 1985 and even that far back the FAA was expecting (demanding?) we block the rudder to simulate VMC at a higher IAS. Part 23 airplanes are pretty tame, but intentionally going beyond the edge of controllability . . . no thanks.

    SID selection & Clearance Delivery

When I was at PRC in the late 70's it was on the field. They provided field advisories. It is where I took my Private and Commercial written exams. I took my Instrument written and ride at the GADO in OWD. Different times.

    SID selection & Clearance Delivery

It works the other way as well. When I was teaching at a controlled field I always let the ATC folks know that a FAM flight was available, just make the request and I'd arrange it.

    SID selection & Clearance Delivery

Which is what they get paid very well to do. My understanding is that ATC would rather you ask for the service you need then have you wandering into the sky unprepared. I've never heard a controller say "I was going to give you a different clearance but then I realized it might make you work...

    Best Keyboard for Me?

Lots of great info. An acoustic piano is difficult for me. I live on the second and third floors of an old Victorian house. Also, I don't want to have another item to move when I retire in a few years. I don't know if I need a full 88 keys for initial learning, so I would not mind some...

    Best Keyboard for Me?

Time to learn something new. I've always wanted to know how to play the piano. I don't have the space for one in my home so I'm thinking of purchasing an electronic keyboard. I admit that I have not even begun my investigation except to note that there are many, many options. What will be...

    Crossing the Appalachian Mountains

Mountains make their own weather. Here we are at 1B5 (Franconia, NH) It was great weather except for the clouds created by the mountain upslope.

PIREPs - So you want to sound like a pro.

We had "mild" Ice We had "heavy turbulence Knowledgeable professional pilots would never give these report. Why? Because they know there is no definition of "mild icing" or "heavy turbulence." Yet this language pops up in pilot reports from time to time. When giving a PIREP to this board or...

    Hypothetical Trainer: IFR Certified Tomahawk

Can't play devil's advocate. I've always been a PA-38 fan. I taught in them when they were new. I think it is perfect for the role. Note the absence of an autopilot may add some instrument training time.

A question about ice in the north east

Flying long distances VFR is an exercise in weather pattern analysis. I fly Lady Luscombe throughout the eastern U.S. during temperate months. Some years I never have a problem other years I spend multiple days stuck. Not so much flying in the winter because the heat knob in L^2 is purely a...

Taxiway closed by notam due to snow/ice

Red Herring. Hazardous attitude is a matter of opinion. One pilot's hazard is another's challenge. It all depends on the pilot's education, training and experience.

Manteo, NC to Akron, OH in a P46T

Jon doesn't have adverts in his videos so I don't think he's making money and he's not begging anyone to join patreon or the like. I've used portions of his videos for training other pilots from time to time. He responds to posts on here and on his youtube channel. I find the videos...
