Why are people still wearing masks?

I believe young healthy people are wearing masks just as a political statement. Sure some elderly folks with breathing problems need to be cautious. Here in WY we laugh at young healthy kids wearing face diapers.

Rant: Exercising PIC, no not that PIC

Unfortunately I see this too often. Pretty paint jobs and cool avionics on a plane that seriously needs mechanical and safety maintenance. Yes pretty paint warms your groin more than new magnetos but gee wizz people

    Absolutely crazy Bo fuel tanks

Call me old fashioned but on the glorious O-470 my preference is for a carburator. The Bendix fuel injection is simpler. That might not have changed the outcome of this incident though

    Fluctuating altimeter on takeoff

If your theory is correct (and may be) the moving air past the static port could cause a brief incorrect reading for the sudden rush of air but doesn't justify "bounced around wildly".. you could temporarily swap out the altimeter if you have access to one

How big of a hit is my wallet about to take?

First get a KNOWN GOOD mechanical gauge on a short hose, find an oil tap on the engine (probably 1/8 npt) and compare readings to the cockpit gauge. Probably you're seeing good pressure when cool, poor pressure when hot. If oil filter is not showing metal don't worry

    Zenith 750 stol

That airframe performs better with large prop diameter as opposed to lots of pitch. That rules out the VW conversions with direct drive (small diameter, big pitch).. depending on CG go with Rotax or Cont O-200.. Rotax is lighter but you may NEED the weight up front

What plane would you buy in my situation?

For me an Arrow or Mooney began the hunt for replacing my beloved 172.. wife and me are small people so Mooney was big enough. Found a nice Arrow II that probably is my last plane.
