    Trio vs TruTrak

$6500 for the Trio plus the STC/install kit from the STC group. That's for a Grumman..... Edit: Oops! Cap beat me to it.

    Rebate Flight?

Just picked up my plane from Pippin-York after another great install job :-) Moderate turbulence up high so I decided to try the flight at 6500 with flight following, about a one hour flight. Controllers could see me the entire flight. The numbers on the report all looked great but I failed the...

    GPS 4xx crossing radials

I have a GPS400 and one VOR so can't do it the old fashioned way. Sorry Ed :p What was confusing me was when I hit enter after changing the second VOR/radial it would change back to the original VOR. What I didn't notice is it was changing the radial to match my new waypoint. Clear as mud, eh...

    GPS 4xx crossing radials

I'm actually going through some scenarios to sharpen my skills :) Let's say I'm off airway IFR and the controller tells me to hold at crossing radials. How do I set this up on a Garmin 400 series? I go to the user waypoint page and can enter radial and distance from a VOR. It shows a place for a...

Buying first plane and need to upgrade avionics

The next owner of your airplane will appreciate you putting so much time and money into this ;) If you're serious about the timelines you mentioned you'll realistically only get a couple of years use out of the avionics. I agree with @James331, buy what you need and use the rest of your money...

    HILPT teardrop angle

Sad when you hijack your own thread :-) When I was doing my IR there was a question on a practice test where you are basically opposite the inbound heading. The correct entry was teardrop. I asked my instructor why and he wasn't sure. He said it wasn't a big deal because you would probably never...

    HILPT teardrop angle

Is there a rule of thumb for initial offset angle when doing HILPT teardrop entry? KBWD RNAV 17 coming from the southeast using MUSRE IAF. 8 mile holding pattern. Normal 30 degree offset for teardrop obviously doesn't work.

    Holding pattern or not?

I was in the area south of PEQIS. Clearance was cleared direct PEQIS, maintain 4000 until established on a published segment, cleared for RNAV 35 approach.

    Holding pattern or not?

So yep, NoPT required from where I was arriving from. Also missed that on the brief.....

    Holding pattern or not?

Here's the plate. X marks where I was when cleared direct PEQIS and cleared for the approach.

    Holding pattern or not?

Dumb question from a newby.... So I'm on a instrument flight plan in contact with ATC but not on radar. They clear me direct to the middle part of the T on an RNAV approach and cleared for the approach. I'm a few miles from the T end but in that direction. The approach plate shows a hold if not...

    TRIO AP in more planes

So I'm taking my instrument check ride next week and (over)confidently thinking I should put an autopilot in my AA5. The Trio is supposedly on the verge of having an STC for Grumman's so I'm looking at that. Anyone have one installed? Did your local A&P do the install or did you go to an...

    GPS for vor approach

Thanks sarangan. I should have read past 1-2-3-c 4. Seemed like that was saying you couldn't. 4. Pilots may not substitute for the NAVAID (for example, a VOR or NDB) providing lateral guidance for the final approach segment. This restriction does not refer to instrument approach procedures with...

    GPS for vor approach

I'll apologize up front. I know I've seen threads on this but can't find any. What is the authorizing document for using GPS for VOR approach to the MAP?

    DPE

Sorry, this is for an IFR check ride.

    DPE

I've been looking at DPE's in my area and found Terry Strange in Granbury TX. I like the idea of doing the check ride in less congested air space since that's pretty much what I fly in. Any body have experience with Terry? Thanks!

    Lost GPS on approach

I live in the sticks so many airports here don't have ATC comm to the MDA. Some don't have comm to the MSA. I looks like the best option with comm is fly the missed heading(s) until you can get back with ATC. If it's lost GPS -and- lost comm I'd fly the alternate. I'm sure there are other...

    Lost GPS on approach

I came across something today I haven't seen mentioned and couldn't find anything in formal or informal references. It's when you're flying a GPS approach with a waypoint for a missed approach hold and no other way to identify the waypoint. What's the procedure for the missed if you lose your...
