Tips for planning a "long" VFR-only XC

I spent several years as a VFR only pilot. Many long distance trips. A few in a DA40. Great times. I’d suggest from where you are, a flight down the coast. Head straight south, climb to 8-10k and hug the coast line. I’d go a mile or two off the coast and let the SO have a great view the entire...

    Flying a PA/32 on BasicMed

Thanks for the reply TomHaines. Much appreciated. Lawyers can be thorough. Why didn’t AOPA include the PA32-260 and PA32-300 on their STC? There’s a lot of disagreement about whether you can fly Basic Med in those aircraft and it is clearly a gray area. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    Centurion Power pack overhaul

I am by no means an expert, so if someone can provide more insight, please do. From what I understand, the word you use can make a huge difference in price: Replace Overhaul Repair IRAN (Inspect and Repair as Needed) Are you sure your friend is using the right word to get what he needs? Sent...

    Just curious....

On a long trip, more than 3-4 hours, my headsets start to hurt my ears. I’ll switch to the overhead speaker and use the hand mic. Works great. At 2100 to 2200 rpm, the cockpit is 87-89 decibels, not too bad. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    Hot starting io-540

In the case of my engine when I had this similar problem, and is what I think you have, the mag was weak. At cold temps, with priming there was an even and proper fuel air mixture in the cylinder and the weak mag was able to ignite it. The plane ran fine and the normal mag check was fine. At...

    Hot starting io-540

I’m having flashbacks to my starting problem days. Telling the mechanic over and over that the plane wouldn’t start. Being afraid to stop for fuel because I wouldn’t be able to start the engine. Trying every variation of starting available on the web. It’s not pilot error. Our planes can be hard...

    Body numbness in first flight?

As an ER physician, I enjoy reading POA, a bunch of pilots arguing about how to fly a plane. What’s better is reading their medical advice! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    Hot starting io-540

I shove the throttle full forward and the mixture full forward and turn the boost pump on and watch for the fuel flow to stabilize. When it’s really hot, that may be 20-30 seconds. Then I pull the mixture to idle cut off, leaving the throttle full forward. And then I wait 30 seconds at least...

    Hot starting io-540

Had the exact same problem. Replaced the mag. Starts easy. Troubleshoot your ignition system with a good mechanic. BTW, a standard mag check does not tell anything about the health of your ignition system. Also had this problem on an O 360 on a Cardinal. Regular mechanic kept saying I needed...

    Sky Diving...

I did most of my jumps at Skydive AL. Great place. If you don’t want to jump, you can pay to ride right seat in the jump plane. Almost as much fun as the skydiving. It’s amazing what the pilots can get those planes to do. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    Help with overcoming "IFR bordem"...

I was a VFR only pilot for about 5-6 years. Took trips all over, family vacations, etc. Loved it! Got delayed maybe 3-4 times, nothing bad. Finally got stuck out of town nearly 5 hours waiting for an overcast to burn off, the family staring at me the entire time. Decided to get my IFR. Trained...

AOPA Lists Top 10 "Airport Access Watch List"

    Buying my first plane PA-32-300

Yes. There is a very clear divide between buy and run away. It is different for everyone and has to do with your knowledge, experience, risk aversion and resources. I’m on my second plane. I know several mechanics. I have their numbers and a good relationship. I’ve got a great avionics guy. I...
