    $1600 - SKY-TEC STARTER 12V 149-NL

Unfortunately, the B&C alternators don’t have as much capacity or as much approval coverage as the more common Plane Power alternators (also owned by Hartzell). I grew to dislike the Plane Power alternators because it seems like every time I install one I have to fabricate parts to make it 100%...

    $1600 - SKY-TEC STARTER 12V 149-NL

I think Spruce is the only supplier tacking on the core charge. Air Power would probably be a better source if you really want a Sky Tec starter. But I’d much rather support B&C where I can at this point since they seem to have better prices, better products, and better support.

    Changing Operating Arcs on Tach

I think all the ones I have gotten came within a week. They’ve all included the arcs and resetting the tach time to match the one being replaced. They have all been for fairly common applications however, so it is possible that Mitchell had a stack of pre-printed tach faces that already had the...

    Changing Operating Arcs on Tach

I've ordered numerous tachs from them with no issue.

    Quality of Flight School Aircraft

That's pretty common in my experience. As a flight instructor who is also a mechanic, I probably told the guys taking care of the flight school airplanes about the majority of airworthiness issues that needed to be addressed because the other instructors didn't always notice things or realize...

    Quality of Flight School Aircraft

Some posters seem a bit quick to blame the mechanics or poor maintenance for the problems. Before I did that I'd want to know when the last time the aircraft saw the inside of a shop was. It could be that most or all of these problems popped up after the last inspection/service occurred and...

    Changing Operating Arcs on Tach

I can’t help with a shop recommendation but you can order a new Mitchell mechanical tachometer with custom arcs incorporated into them for a fairly reasonable price. That may be a backup option if you don’t find a willing overhaul shop.

Youtube Pilot and her dad perish in TN

Dunning-Kruger is certainly a factor in the training scenario presented but that is not what I am referring to with regards to the personality trait I mentioned.

Youtube Pilot and her dad perish in TN

It does, if they realize the seriousness of the predicament they have put themselves in. I’ve run across some students/pilots who are so clueless that they don’t recognize that they could have hurt or killed themselves. I’ve also observed that there is a personality trait that many (but not...

    Lovely preflight check

Cracks in that area are fairly common. They often can be fixed but if all the parts have a lot of time on them (and multiple overhauls) you may be better off heading in the direction you’re going. Hopefully the engine replacement experience isn’t too painful for you.

    Helicopters on this forum?

I’m aware of that one. Perhaps I wasn’t clear in my comment but my point was that the market is much smaller so don’t expect the same volume of online activity that you’ll see for airplanes. I found that talking to a couple local operators much more fruitful when I was starting out.

    Helicopters on this forum?

The best course of action would be to buy one. In my opinion the Bell 47 is a great helicopter to learn in and would be pretty gentle on the pocketbook for low use personal ownership. Parts a are getting harder to come by however, so I would want to work with an experienced mechanic to care for...

    Helicopters on this forum?

My recommendation would be to find a semi local helicopter guy to work with. Compared to airplanes, the helicopter market is pretty small and I've never seen much online.

How much Camguard to add to O-470?

Big Continentals use a friction drive (think wound spring with a shaft passing through it). It is bathed in motor oil and can slip under some circumstances, most often being when they're worn out. I haven't seen Camguard cause any starter adapter slippage but the motor oils with the Lycoming...

    Auto v Aviation fuel

The price usually remains the same until the next load comes in. Of course, that means that it will be gone fast if there is a big price increase and you’re the cheapest in the area. I do know that there are some that will make a slight increase to make a bit more money when prices are on their...

    Auto v Aviation fuel

As a broad generalization, most FBOs or airports price the fuel at $1 over cost in my area. It seems like there’s always one outlier within reasonable flying distance that does $0.50-$0.75 and tries to make up the difference with volume on their self serve. It seems to work, because the traffic...

    Auto v Aviation fuel

in my area the aviation fuel price only changes when the airport/FBO buys more fuel. So if nobody has bought fuel for a while I wouldn’t expect to see prices changing just because gas prices at the corner store are.

A Socio economic discussion about boomers.

Part of the reason the stripped vehicles aren’t available on car lots is the same reason you can’t get home builders to build small/conservative homes - the profit margin is too small to make it worth their while. They’ll do it if asked, but that’s not what car manufacturers or home builders...

    Taildragger recommendations

Getting in and out isn't the problem, that is easy. Bigger guys in a standard width Cub or those with an inseam of greater than about 32" may be. While I think they're superior to pretty much anything else that has been suggested in this thread so far, they're not necessarily for everyone of all...

    Taildragger recommendations

With a standard dimension cabin and seat placement? I can tell you that I've spent some long days in Cubs and I'm ready to not be in them anymore. If the seat back leaned back a bit more and it was slid back another inch or two it would be nice.
