    Putting CamGuard to the Test

It is a concern for some engines and circumstances. Calcium has been reduced in SN plus and SP compliant motor oils out of concern for low speed preignition in direct injected turbo applications. The research I have done on the subject suggests that it is likely not a concern for other engines...

C-182 Alternator Breaker Pops With Pitot Heat On

I’ve also replaced a couple of bad breakers that showed similar issues. While I wouldn’t advocate immediately jumping to breaker replacement without looking at other electrical system basics first, it would be high on my list of suspect parts.

Do I have an antenna issue.

A nano VNA is so cheap there is no reason that it would be out of reach for someone who is concerned with their antenna/radio performance. No need to hunt around for a ham, although finding an Elmer with solid knowledge of antennas and tuning may be helpful. Perhaps the OP already has something...

    Antennae appearance database

Likely also part of the ADF antenna, although I’ve never seen a base like that before.

    Internal engine pre-heater--opinions?

Not sure what you’re after here but this is similar to the oil heaters in the Tanis kits. The main difference is that this is 250 watts instead of 50 like the typical Tanis oil heater is.

What single engine trainer to buy?

I'd stick with common airplanes if he wants to have a successful operation. Insurance and parts availability are going to be far easier to deal with on something that there are a lot of, like a 172 or a Cherokee. Personally, I suspect the 172 has a slight edge on ongoing operation costs but a...

After first solo in student owned plane

Was that before or after the addition of the 90 day limit on solo privileges? Interestingly, the solo endorsement verbiage for acting as PIC in an additional category/class still doesn't have the time limitation on it unless the instructor adds it. I had a student that held a sport pilot...

After first solo in student owned plane

If I found out a student of mine was doing something like that after laying out the solo privileges and limitations that I was comfortable with, they'd be a former student of mine in short order.

Fuel Injection Servo Friction, Effort to Move?

In my experience there will be a slight bit more resistance to movement than a typical carburetor throttle but nothing terribly excessive. I’ve never seen one that had more resistance to movement than any of the others, they’ve all been pretty uniform. I have however found plenty of gummed up...

    Ammeter not indicating

Yes, the power for the bus does go through the ammeter. That’s why I said that it is unlikely to be a bad connection. If it was a poor connection he’d had a lot of other problems as well. About the only thing that doesn’t go through the ammeter is the starter motor.

    Ammeter not indicating

If the bus is powered up it can’t be a bad connection; at least not one that is outside the meter itself since the original post says it has an internal shunt.

    Ammeter not indicating

In my opinion, you’ve done all you need to. Buy an ammeter and go from there. Depending on battery type, 12.6v is about what I’d expect for a fully charged, open circuit voltage. Your 12.3v measurement at the bus is with some electrical devices turned on, thus dragging the battery down a bit...

    Perplexing Vacuum Leak

Check your crankcase vent system before assuming something is wrong with the engine. You would have messed with it during the intake and carburetor install.

    Perplexing Vacuum Leak

You can use a propane torch to find a vacuum leak too. And depending on the intake you have, it may or may not be suitable for use with an exhaust manifold. I know the Clifford manifolds specifically call out for using a header (due to flange thickness differences). A 625 cfm carburetor is...

    Perplexing Vacuum Leak

It depends on size, but not really.

    Perplexing Vacuum Leak

Do you know for sure that you have a vacuum leak and where it is coming from? There are various ways to figure that out and it needs to be the starting point. Aside from that, the 240 and 300-6 use shared fasteners to retain both the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold. If the manifold...

Thank goodness for ADS-B in and Foreflight

It all depends on where you live and primarily fly. There isn't a single airport in the state I reside in that cannot be accessed without a transponder and ADSB. There are only a handful of places a person can't go in surrounding states as well. Because of this, I can think of plenty of aircraft...

    Engine Vibration

As mentioned, knowing more about the vibration and its frequency can narrow down the potential sources to look at. If you have someone that can help you determine that, it is where I’d start. But another thing to think about is what changed from the time that there was no vibration to now. Was...

How Many Planes Do You Have

I only own one for personal use right now. For business use my partner and I have 8 airplanes and 1 helicopter.

Uh…how to sell a plane for dummies

The same PDFs you get on the CD are now available online in most cases. But if waiting 2-3 weeks for the CD is your preference, there’s nothing wrong with doing it that way. I’d just prefer to get the data in 30 minutes or so where I can. The limitation to both the CD and the online documents...
