How to tell if a magneto is coupled or not?

Absolutely. And ADs do apply to E/AB aircraft so he had better be determining the applicability and adhering to it. For me, if I had the option I’d be doing a shower of sparks conversion or some sort of electronic system to avoid the impulse coupling trouble on a 540.

How to tell if a magneto is coupled or not?

There is an AD that applies to the impulse coupling on magnetos used on the 540, which I’m guessing is what you’re thinking of.

I have pretty much 4 cornered the continental US in VFR only aircraft, largely on a schedule. What you will find if you’re honest with yourself is that not having an instrument rating or a VFR only aircraft is not the limiter you think it is as a fresh private pilot. When asked the same...

    $50. Oil filter

Painting with broad brush strokes here, but the aircraft and automotive filters are not the same. I’ve cut tons of both open to inspect. The K&N automotive filter is the closest in construction and quality to aircraft filters that I’ve found to date. As an aside, not all Fram filters are...

    Auto conversion ideas

Where are you hoping to gain performance? Climb or cruise or somewhere else? While my last comment may have been a bit abstract, my point and experience remains constant. What I have seen almost universally is that when people try repitching a fixed pitch prop to get more cruise speed (and...

That generally only happens when the owner thinks they know more than the manufacturer.

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

No. Awareness that the fuel actually exists (at least sort of) and that it isn’t just vaporware. People keep trying to claim this Baron is involved in some kind of “test”. I’m not convinced it is, as any testing necessary should have occurred before the STC was issued. The reason I addressed...

Tailwheel time...does it matter what its in?

Ag aviation should be his plan B. Around here, operators will string guys along with the promise of flying so they can keep loaders. Some eventually get a chance but I’ve seen a lot more pass through without flying than those that do. The low time guys who make it in without years of loading and...

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

As was mentioned already, bladder testing was performed previously. Years ago at this point if I’m not mistaken. If this test was really a test for bladders, don’t you think it is a bit late or the STC was issued prematurely if GAMI is now all the sudden concerned about it? And if they’re...

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

I know that some component testing like you suggested was done a while ago (prior to the STC for the fuel being issued). My response was primarily targeted at the comments suggesting that the "testing" done in the Baron wasn't worthwhile because it wasn't a properly constructed test. I have my...

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

Depends on what was being tested. I have my doubts that bladders were the focus.

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

Perhaps it is a better experiment than you think. Bladders have been made from various materials over the years, some of which have held up better than others. People aren’t going to be happy if their 60+ year old bladders suddenly won’t hold the new fuel.

Canadian Mechanic in Texas (or Florida or anywhere in between)

One option might be to find a Canadian mechanic that winters in one of the southern states. Other than that, I don’t have any leads for you.

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

Perhaps that is true within the aviation industry. There are various test facilities around the US that I expect could handle the task of performing the testing, if they were asked to. The question is, have these guys bothered to pursue it? I’m not trying to downplay GAMI or what capabilities...

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

That's not a practical approach for existing TCd aircraft. Perhaps new design and construction units could implement that but even then, the market has generally spoken and isn't in favor of adding electronic controls. Lycoming has had an EFI engine around for years and there has been little...

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

Because they weren't part of the EAGLE program? Perhaps. Is there an incentive to reach a conclusion before then? Or a penalty if they take longer?

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

You couldn’t do it with knock sensors either, which is what I was mainly responding to. They’re taking the most practical approach, which is changing the fuel.

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

There are dual electronic ignitions that are now approved, which negates that concern. The bigger issue I have with a knock sensor is that you’re likely going to be limiting power on at least some engines in the fleet which are already knock limited. That is not an approach that I would find...

    Aileron alignment question

I agree with everything you said. In my experience, many mechanics take the easy way out and start in the middle of the process, either because they don’t want to take the time to do it right or because the customer would blow a gasket on getting charged for the time to do the rigging job from...

    AERA 660 issues

That is true. The OP mentioned IAS and TAS in his first post, implying that he thought one of the two is what would be displayed on the gps, which is why I wrote what I wrote. It’s also the reason I mentioned that the altitude likely won’t match what an altimeter reads perfectly. But yes, you...
