Buying my first airplane and have couple of concerns

On our PA12 on floats used for sightseeing and instruction we had a tach that only began recording above a certain RPM. There was ALWAYS a big difference between tach and Hobbs time, especially with all the taxiing time done at idle for positioning on water. It makes a huge difference for...

91.126(b)(1) - Yes, Virginia, it is regulatory.

But the upwind is parallel and just offset from the runway, and you have the runway clearly in sight. Even the idiot on the downwind going in the other direction is predictably further away, unless he's both an idiot and clueless to his pattern position for the wrong way.

    Had a close call today...

I file ASRS reports even when I'm 100% sure there is no possible violation.

91.126(b)(1) - Yes, Virginia, it is regulatory.

Why not do an upwind entry when approaching from straight in? I do that all the time in the Cub. Reasoning: 1. It's where other traffic is least likely to be. 2. It provides a much better look at the airport environment, i.e. the windsock, the runway and taxiways, and other traffic in the...

91.126(b)(1) - Yes, Virginia, it is regulatory.

At non-towered fields it's always ultimately see and avoid. The radio can be helpful, but not everyone has one, and those that do are often mis-using them - wrong frequency, wrong runway, over-announcing, under announcing, etc. They're also relying on their radio to be heard by everyone else...

    Situational depression

Depression is a completely normal human response after the situations the OP experienced. I'm not so sure that psychotropic drugs are equally "normal", although they seem to have become the standard way to manage it. Of course, I'm not a fan of big pharma either . . .

91.126(b)(1) - Yes, Virginia, it is regulatory.

If I recall correctly, the administrative judge has the authority to determine what constitutes the "vicinity or the airport". I "think" I remember a determination in Alaska where for an airliner that was five miles, based on the approach speed of the aircraft rather than just the absolute...

Wasn't Bob Hoover trapped by voluntarily surrenduring his certificate?

Tailwheel time...does it matter what its in?

I get that, but should that world of experience have the perceived value it has for operations like towing and and cropdusting? Shouldn't the number of landings be the parameter used for proficiency? You can fly a TW aircraft for two hours and get one landing, or fly the same aircraft...

Tailwheel time...does it matter what its in?

I'd sell the 172B and replace it with a comparable tailwheel model, or even something less expensive that still suits your needs. The fear of tailwheels is unfounded IMHO, and I always wonder what the difference is between a fifty hour TW pilot and a 500 hour one actually is. In reality...

Looks like he should have been jailed BEFORE the crash flight.

Peripheral Edema - is it disqualifying?

Better to overthink it now than wish you had done so later. If you're not in a rush, I suggest that you wait and see if one of the active MDs on this board has specific advice based on those codes. They are "procedural" codes and may not reflect the actual diagnosis used. No matter what, my...

Peripheral Edema - is it disqualifying?

Find out what the actual diagnosis was (and the specific code that was used). Even if you choose not to report it on this application, the diagnosis can slip into your own medical record and reappear later on in your training or career, when it becomes much harder, more expensive, and time...

Garmin database updates - user frustrations

I started deleting all of the files on the card before downloading updates. Not sure it fixed the problem or not. It's still not clear to me whether I need a top card and bottom card as I had for a long time until fairly recently.

    S Turns over an Airport????

That's always my strategy at non-towered fields, then I monitor his actions closely and always have an "out", or several of them.

    S Turns over an Airport????

If you mean running into "people doing strange things at non-towered fields" then yes. Someone calling intentions five miles out to me means I've likely got at least a minute or two to depart and get out of the way, but it's up to the departing pilot to do whatever he does and be safe.

Peripheral Edema - is it disqualifying?

It shows which of those conditions poses the highest risk of causing an expensive and very long term delay and permanent threat to an operation that requires a class 1 medical, if that's your long term goal. The edema is not likely to pose the same risk as the psycholoigical diagnosis.

Garmin database updates - user frustrations

I'm updating the avionics the my C206 before delivering it to the broker. The GADM seemed "confused", so I rebooted and started over. When I finished uploading data for the G500, G750 and G650 they all showed green checks for the three devices. I drove to the airport and loaded them into each...

Peripheral Edema - is it disqualifying?

What he wrote was that he didn't have a "diagnosis or anything", a statement that flies in the face of common sense, especially with two visits to the same psychiatrist. He's getting advice because it's pretty evident that he's nearly clueless about how the FAA medical process actually works...
