    Fatal: walked into prop

Ugh. That’s awful. A long time ago when I was a primary student, the other CFI at my flight school walked into the prop of an Arrow that he was sitting on the wing of after helping the PIC get it started when he realized a diamond motor glider taxiing by was a bit too close with the wingtip. He...

    Towers snitching on aborted take-offs?

Can’t speak for every airplane but I agree with this in general. I’ve had it happen once - and other than having some really cold air blasting on the side of my body (this was winter in NJ) it was pretty much a non event. Took my time doing a normal return to pattern and landing. Closed the door...

KWVI Watsonville MId Air, Multiple Fatalities

I'm not saying it is what happened, just a possibility. And while I agree (at least I hope so!) that "air rage" is exceptionally rare, so are crashes and to the extent that risky "air rage" behavior would result in increased risk (which I would argue is a reasonable assumption), it's not...

KWVI Watsonville MId Air, Multiple Fatalities

For all we know the C340 guy saw the 152, got ****ed that he was being "cut off", decided to do a close fly by to scare the guy (hence speed, no gear, no flaps) and just screwed up the fly by and collided. Note: I am not saying this is the likely/correct answer just one of many possible scenarios.

CFI and student die in crash SMO

I have to give credit to my primary flight instructor who took me on as a 13 year old student who outweighed her by a good margin (I'm 6'6" and 200lbs as an adult now but was probably 5'10" and 140 lbs back then while she was 5'0" and ~90lbs). She certainly made me think I did the landing the...

KWVI Watsonville MId Air, Multiple Fatalities

I fly a slow jet and will often do 200ish on a visual approach but my Vref is in the 88 KT range so I have to get it slowed down as I get onto <2-3 mile final. It all depends on traffic and ATC expectations. I will not be anywhere near 200 KTS “in the pattern” because it would be very...

    Does it ever stop?

I don’t think i will run out of upgradeitis until I hit the top of the single pilot jet range (CJ3+ or P300 most likely). As a teen I dreamed of one day having a Cherokee or Archer, then a Bonanza. Eventually bought a Cirrus SR22, then upgraded to a turbo FIKI SR22, then sold it and have been...

Talk me out of a Columbia 400

Seems like a good deal. You should get it. But definitely get the IR too or you are wasting money… BTW - I don’t suppose you are on rennlist with same user name by chance?

Regarding HGI questions: The rooms are $650 /night during the show and I usually book 2-3 months ahead. I now know the owner and manager which helps somewhat but really the big advantage I get from that is that they allow me to only book the nights I want - typically they want people to book the...

On the big jets they’re much harder to put on because the engines are way up there. The engines on the mustang are at head level for me so there really isn’t much excuse to not put them on unless it’s a quick fuel/lunch stop or something. But if I’m parking overnight, I put the covers on.

Osh transition start for next year

I think I have gone into Oshkosh every possible way other than driving (Fisk, warbird arrival, IFR in IMC, IFR in VMC, FLD) - this year i came in IFR in VMC and other than racing a major storm to the field, it was a non event. 10 minutes after parking (on the HGI ramp), it was a full blown deluge…
