Crash in Carrollton GA 2 airplanes down, 3 dead.

If he had reported a straight in plus reporting he was intending to land there earlier, I feel sure that she, an instructor, would have been tuned in and heard him as she should have been trying to instill proper radio procedure to the student. The fact that he was a former FAA employee and...

    what does a checkout entail?

A lot depends on you. How many hours do you have? He or she will certainly want to see your log book. Are you comfortable flying it, stalling it, landing say in 2500 feet or do you need a six thousand foot runway for a 172? Pattern work, using the radio correctly, etc. An instructor with some...

What is the real total cost of airplane ownership? Part I

Running oil this long, even with a decent filter is really stupid. Oil change is the cheapest best way to preserve any engine especially an air cooled engine! every 30 hours with a filter. 120 hours is really absurd.

Crash in Carrollton GA 2 airplanes down, 3 dead.

We do assume that had they been communicating they could easily have avoided dying. In another instance the MU2 was on a long final,in bound from palm beach. The Cessna 150 was making a normal pattern and had just touched down when the MU2 pilot spotted him on the runway, tried to throttle up...

Crash in Carrollton GA 2 airplanes down, 3 dead.

No but what would help is better education about just how dangerous it is to remain silent at a non towered airport. To think just looking is sufficient is not very bright. These three people were obviously not communicating. It killed them. The cost of a hand held and an exterior antenna is...

Trash the log book and start over?

Yes by all means keep your log book and just add to it! You'll find a lot of it will come back to you as you take lessons. I stopped flying for about ten years after logging over a thousand hours. It all came back very quickly when I picked it up again. Sort of like riding a bicycle. You never...

    Shingles

There is a preventative shot for shingles which I did not know about and never got. Wise to get it if your older and had chicken pox! Not one hundred percent but helps. My shingles were scalp and near the eye which wired up my doctor who immed. Sent me to the eye doctor. Turned out, No problem.

I think I found my ideal plane once I'm ready to buy

Depends on who repainted it and when. It happens and needs to be inspected carefully. And yes, zincc chromate is easily stripped with paint stripper.

Crash in Carrollton GA 2 airplanes down, 3 dead.

I agree. Overflying the field at pattern altitude to " take a look" is dangerous. I was taught to overfly at two three hundred feet above pattern altitude then enter on a fourty five. Always done it this way, using the radio always. With the good handhelds made today there's no excuse for not...

    Upholstery work

True.in addition most fabrics today for upholstered furniture etc, must be "fire resistant". This fellow must know this. He should be just fine.

At what point do you go to the ER?

Did you go to the emergency room when this happened? Did you eventually consult a good cardiologist? If not why not? Sound as though you should get a complete work up with an excellent heart specialist , stress test, sonogram, blood oxygen , on and on. I sure would not fly until a real pro had...

    Shingles

You understand correctly. It can be very serious if it involves your optic nerve and can ruin your eyesight. I had it recently and my doctor advised me to get checked by a licensed eye specialist MD immed. , ( verses an optometrist) it attacks your immune system and triggered ,the doctor...

Crash in Carrollton GA 2 airplanes down, 3 dead.

No....that's not at all unusual. In fact that's how most midairs occur in the pattern or near the airport, one aircraft overtaking the Other! read up on it. Relying simply on looking out the window, not using the radio out out of stubbornness or ignorance is criminal. Like texting in a moving...

I think I found my ideal plane once I'm ready to buy

If the Comanche has been repainted then one must be very careful of corrosion due to the paint stripper stripping off the factory protective coating in places . It needs a mechanic familiar with the Comanche to do a careful prebuy or annual.

Crash in Carrollton GA 2 airplanes down, 3 dead.

Exactly what faa study's report. One aircraft overtaking another while in or near the pattern. Impossible to see through the bottom of an airplane no matter how hard you look outside . Communication is so important .

Crash in Carrollton GA 2 airplanes down, 3 dead.

Good idea. Most would hope you have an external antenna hooked up and that you announce where you are in or near a traffic pattern.

Average pay for SWA $300k by 2020

Absurd reply if one considers the testing and background each u2 pilot goes through and then considers where they fly, the plane itself and its reputation for being difficult to control, etc. etc. you sound like you may have applied and been turned down.

    T6 or Beaver

Both are expensive to maintain especially if either has not been correctly maintained. They have completely different missions. I.e.:If your a backcountry type you certainly would not want a t6.

Average pay for SWA $300k by 2020

I don't think his degree and what he flew in the Air Force are " average" by any means.....FYI. The ones I've known ( 10) usually droned around in multi engine and some had a degree some did not.
