    How to impress your spouse

Nuke it from orbit. Only way to be sure.

    Uber tipping?

I always tip Uber drivers. They've almost always been super cool and helpful. I always give them cash so .gov won't have any record of it if the driver so chooses.

    Any Flight Bag advice?

I use the Flight Gear HP Crosswind from Sporty's but it's starting to get a bit cumbersome and the seam for little water bottle/radio pocket on the side is starting to com apart. If I had my own plane, it would be a moot point but I have my headset(s), iPad, RAM mount, Sentry, handheld, barf...

Interested in how many have trouble falling asleep in hotels?

I almost never have trouble falling asleep in a hotel room. The curtains are opaque to any wavelength of light longer than gamma rays and the bed is usually pretty decent. At home it takes me too much time to fall asleep.

Funny things non-pilots say on GA flights

My lovely wife seems to rip one every time she goes up with me.

Funny things non-pilots say on GA flights

Second time I took my wife flying we departed in some pretty gusty conditions for an overnight trip to Harris Ranch and I was dancing on the rudder pedals during climbout. Around 500 AGL after it settled down a quite a bit I looked over and asked her how she was doing. With tears coming from...

    Beauty is in the eye...

A 150 is just....fun. Solo'd in one, private checkride in the same one. Many years later someone drove a Pitts into it's tail so she's no longer around. :( Been wanting a plane pretty badly and starting to think an IFR 150 might be the one for me. Someone talk me out of it.

    IFR: how to build time?

You can knock off much of the XC time acting as safety pilot for someone else who is in a similar position. Combining hood time with XC time is a good way to do it quickly but the checkride is pretty task-intensive, something you don't particularly get droning through the sky to some distance...

New IR student, first flight today!

I had an AI fail during a cross country with a safety pilot. Just ignored it and continued on. Thing came back to life on decent back home with my partner flying.

New IR student, first flight today!

Wait until your instructor starts giving you things to do in addition to flying the plane.

    Got my IR ticket

Congrats!! I never really wanted my IR because I figured it was more trouble with maintaining currency than it was worth. Was out of flying for nine years, then got back into it. Wife and I took a couple trips and had one or two cancelled due to weather. Living by the SoCal coast the marine...

Female pilot suing former employer after being told she's 'too short' to fly; Gloria Allred represen

It's not but I think that an employer would have to provide reasonable accommodations. I agree that there may be more to this story.

    Checkrides cost how much? Really?

Around SoCal, scheduling a checkride in a reasonable amount of time can be a total PITA. A buddy of mine blew through his 60 days on the discontinuance for his instrument because the DPE he used wouldn't do it in actual conditions and his schedule is blocked out. I paid $700 for my instrument...

I’m an admitted heat “heat wimp” how do you guys handle it?

I used to roadrace motorcycles in 110°F heat and am usually easily able to tolerate it. Being thin and from CA, I wear a jacket when it's in the mid sixties. My wife, on the other hand, feels that heat is the worst thing she can ever experience, plus, she pre-menopausal so it really isn't...

The truth of being maried w/ kids exposed....

Most people who have children shouldn't. My wife and I will never have kids, we have dogs. I don't feel as if I would be a bad parent, I just don't want to sacrifice the things that make me happy for something I'll be stuck with basically forever. I like flying, fishing, shooting, traveling...

    G1000 glare

Umm, no. I was flying a G1000-equipped Diamond last weekend and my polarized sunglasses were blanking out the screens if my head was turned a certain way.

    Instrument Rating

The rest of the time you can be VFR. To the OP, you can train in as many different aircraft as it takes. I did mine in two different PA-28's, two 172's, and even a DA40 just to round things off. I would definitely suggest making sure you get as much actual time as you can during your...

    Chart management?

I have the ASA plate binder which keeps things pretty well situated. I don't really use the paper plates or even like them for that matter. An EFB is so much nicer as is far better organized and finding information much easier. I only really have the paper version for my instrument checkride...
