    portable radio?

My old ICOM uses AAs so no discharge like a rechargeable. If I keep the battery pack removed it lasts as long as any AA in storage. Connect the batteries to the radio and they're dead in a couple months. The circuit powering the electronic power switch kills them.

    portable radio?

Best bet for long-term use is a handheld with a mechanical power switch. My old ICOM had such terrible parasitic drain that a fresh set of batteries were dead in a couple months. It had a power button on the front keypad. I'm sure newer models are better but regardless, something has to power...

    I should know this... MEL

Put an INOP sticker on the gas cap for that tank. That will nullify the requirement for the gauge.

    complex airplane endorsement

Totally got my complex endorsement yesterday, too. I had sufficient time in a DA40 to just review the function of the prop and then review the landing gear systems. Cycled the gear in the air several times, shot an approach so he could show me the steps he likes during one, then some trips...

BOEING 767F crash near Houston in the bay Atlas cargo

This is the first thing I thought, though I didn't hear any mention of the sound of a stick shaker, or anything.

    Instrument Rating

Congats!! Flying IFR will make you feel more like a real pilot. Make sure you use it. I hate VFR days, now. Maintaining currency/proficiency is more fun than ever.

    portable radio?

I have the Yaesu FTA-250. It's 200 bucks and has a rechargeable battery. I have an old ICOM that I absolutely hate. I chose the 250 because it has a mechanical on/off switch as opposed to an electrical one. The battery lasts months in my bag since there is no parasitic drain which the ICOM...

    Lost Communications IFR Help

During my checkride, I planned to arrive at a nearby VOR that was connected to an airway or some defined path to an IF. My DPE stated that I am required to proceed to the clearance limit (destination) and only leave it when I've reached my ETA based on departure time and ETE. The problem I...

    Smells

My wife walks through the soap aisle opening bottles to sniff the contents. I grab the cheapest s*** one the shelf. The only air freshener that needs to be in a bathroom is a book of matches. Anything else and it smells like XXX with a turd in it. That being said, poo-purri (look it up if...

    CFI initial questions

I plan to built up to CFII and then instruct on the side and as a retirement plan. The thing that scares me the most are the open-ended questions I keep hearing about. I absolutely suck at open ended questions and just freeze not knowing where to begin.

Night IFR, a whole new ballgame

There's a reason why the VFR and IFR maps use the colors they do. I highly suggest taking a look at them in the dark using a red light to see the difference. As far as the night IFR is concerned, you don't need any soft lighting because it's not like you need to look outside, anyways. Just...

    Instrument Checkride?

If the limits are with respect to headings or assigned altitudes then dropping "-20" as you mentioned is not a problem as long as you aren't spacing out. If it's an MDA/DA then if the needle even drops a c*** hair below that value it's an automatic fail and the DPE cannot make exceptions based...

    Instrument Checkride?

26.2 miles Anyways, make sure you know your reporting requirements and lost com procedures. If you don't know something, know where to find it. Go over your assigned flight plan with scenarios and emergency procedures. For example, "What would you do/required if XX happens at XX point into...

This time I was "that guy"

One time I made a call to tower inbound from the FAF and had accidentally switched coms to ground frequency then when I pulled off the runway called for taxi to parking on the tower frequency right after acknowledging their call for me to contact ground.

Pilot Awarded $300K for False Arrest

He probably should have been a bit more aware that people outside might be able to see him standing at the window. Other than that, they should probably lighten up a bit.

Does your spouse have a clue

My wife would have a straight-up panic attack and probably keel over, herself. She has taken the controls before, straight and level, and done extremely well. Having her direct the plane towards our destination makes her extremely nervous, as if she will rip a wing off. This is primarily why...
