When to configure airplane for landing during precision approach?

As a CFII and former cargo pilot I'd answer that you need to be comfortable doing both slow and fast approaches. Slow and ready for landing at FAF is always the most stable, perfect for check rides, but it is slow in a 172 or warrior. It isn't bad to shoot an approach faster. As long as you...

GPS database out of date.. are you slant Golf?

Interesting discussion. It makes me think about the 4000 hours of flying I did with paper charts and VOR's back in the 80's 90's. All those envelopes of chart updates Jeppesen used to send out. PITA Now we have EFB's and updates are automatic and easy. And here we are arguing about how to...

    Electronic Ignition options

I'd like the advanced timing. But so far not certified in my plane, Comanche 250, except in fixed timing. Rebuilding my slicks, I've been told, would be at least $500 a mag.... or more. Is that wrong? My slicks are doing great now but are over the 500 mark.

    Electronic Ignition options

I read that link at least 3 times... FAA speak is not easy to understand. I can't figure out which of the four notes apply or if they all do.... If the PA28's have the advanced timing, hopefully the PA-24's / IO-540's will be approved soon. Thanks

    Electronic Ignition options

Do you have both mags Surefly? If you had standard mags before, what differences did you notice in how the engine operated after the Surefly mag was installed?

    Electronic Ignition options

I looked at Electroair and they want $5500.00 Surefly is $1550.00 Anyone know if the Electroair is that much better?

    Electronic Ignition options

I just gave them a call and had a nice chat with Jason. They have the SIM6L for my lycoming 6 cylinder. Certified in fixed timing mode. He says they may have certification in a few weeks for the advanced timing mode. That's what I want. That mode advances the timing in cruise power settings...

    Electronic Ignition options

I'm looking for a certified electronic ignition option. My slick mags are over the 500 hour mark but still running great. I have a IO-540 lycoming engine in a Comanche. Suggestions?

    Ipads

I use the 12.9 Pro. It sits on my lap like my old lap board and paper Jep charts. I got used to looking down with my eyes years ago. Big size is very stable on the lap even in the worst of turbulence. Not always the best choice. Will not work with a stick and some planes the yoke can get in...

    Should I upgrade my Aspen?

I've changed my mind. I think I'll spend the $3000 for the upgrade. I'll wait as long as possible to actually do it and see how the new ones are doing in-flight and regarding install. I can always cancel if there are problems. I'm guessing a year wait...

    Should I upgrade my Aspen?

    Isn't the dual G5s about 8k installed?

    Should I upgrade my Aspen?

Yes for a 500 dollar fee you can skip the 10 day down time for the "upgrade". My shop said 6 hours / 600 dollars maybe for installation but they don't know what the installation will be because the installation documents have not been released yet. So a worst case guess, I'm guessing. Maybe...

    Should I upgrade my Aspen?

So it is looking like the upgrade will be $2999.00 plus an estimate of 6 hours of shop time, + $600.00 for the upgrade. For the Pro Max that hasn't been released yet and the installation manual hasn't been released, so we have no idea exactly what will be required for install. OR Upgrade the...

    Should I upgrade my Aspen?

So what if the upgrade for the Aspen was cheaper, say $1900.00? Would you do it then? I'd be way more tempted.

    Should I upgrade my Aspen?

Yes. No more repairs by Garmin, no more support. I'll keep that until I have problems with it. I'm understanding how to program it and I'm starting to like it. I'll have to try Steamboat sometime.... We had a good season at Mt. Hood in Portland, OR.

    Should I upgrade my Aspen?

Never got the X's. It just makes checking the pitot heat even more important. I guess the $155 battery will keep me going a few more years, then it will be better and cheaper, most likely. Then I'll likely address the other older items. Are you going to do the upgrade?

    Should I upgrade my Aspen?

I have a 2009 Aspen PFD1000. It works fine but I'm considering the $2995.00 upgrade to the Evolution 1000 PRO MAX PFD https://aspenavionics.com/products/general-aviation/efd-1000-pro-max Two reasons: Back up AHRS if the pitot static fails, I hate that my current unit will red X if the pitot...

Garmin just dropped a bomb on the avionics market...

You should ask them what size pants they wear and how that affects their weight and balance.... ;)

    Bose A20 Still?

I tried everything. Wore them high, normal and low, forward and back on my ears I adjusted and adjusted. Over 25 flights sitting in the right seat with time to fiddle. Some of my friends love the Z3s. I guess they dont fit / seal on my average sized noggin or the ANR is better in the A20. I...
