    IR training is exhausting!

When I was an instrument student I really struggled to stay on course, and altitude and then do all of the button pushing and knob turning. This was in a plane without a fancy GPS or AP so all manual. I found that once I learned to trim the airplane and exert minimal control on the yoke...

    My IO-550 upgrade journey

I fly an A36 where we did a similar conversion, with roughly the same engine times we had about 2700 on the IO-520 when it came out because people were looking for an upgrade rather than based on need. We found that we needed to be very attentive to oil analysis. Twice since the new engine...

T route with higher MEA than V airway it overlaps

Looking at Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_airways#:~:text=When%20VORs%20are%20less%20than,14.8%20km)%20total%20width). I'm still confused because the Victor airways a protected 8 miles on either side of the centerline for segments that are less than 102 nm T-routes are said to...

T route with higher MEA than V airway it overlaps

I'm planning a flight out to Ohio and noticed that the overlapping segments of T216 and V58 in PA have a MEA of 4200 on the T route but a lower MEA of 4000 for V58. Its not based on COM reception, do T routes have a wider airway width that could be impacted by terrain?

Engine fire in flight procedures - Skyhawk

And here it is from a PA-28 checklist: "Maintain an airspeed of at least 80 MPH IAS, and if altitude permits, proceed as follows"...Note the mention of __at least__

Engine fire in flight procedures - Skyhawk

In the PA-24 I learned the 45 degree bank, Vne descent technique. The thought was that the air rushing past blows the fire out, I think I saw something in a POH (can't remember which) that said to keep the speed above 130 KIAS.

    Teaching aviation to children

This is a big help for the broad topics in FAA written prep, the thing I'm struggling with is that at his level its all about the tactical aspects of flying the plane. Things like simplified materials that a 9 year old can grok around aerodynamics to teach why you need back pressure in a turn...

    Future of VOR and Instrument?

A quick version of why keep VORs around, I was up last Sunday with a buddy flying approaches around KCON. We were on an IFR flight plan, and as we were coming back into Nashua there was a thin layer of clouds from about 1200 - 2000 which were below freezing. They were rolling in west to east...

    Teaching aviation to children

This last weekend my 9 year old who previously showed 0 interest in aviation and fought against going flying decided he liked MSFS when we were at the NH Aviation Museum in Manchester. He loves it and is working through the lessons that MSFS provides as missions in the program. When I started...

    Struggling to Land the Plane

The plane will land when it's ready. Your job is to get the conditions right so that it wants to. To this end the better you manage your airspeed the better the results will be. If your too fast you'll bounce or float a long way. If you're slow it will be a hard landing as you flare. Work...

    CFI pay structure fairness?

Like with any professional service the company arranging the work has overhead and also profits from their work marketing. If you take this away from the realm of flight instructing to *Auto mechanics *Plumbers *Lawyers in group practice not partners *IT professional services You'll find...

    One Handed First Flight!

Here in New Hampshire it's starting to be turbulence season so 8G21 seems about right until April or so. The gust factor on the ground gives you some insight into the level of turbulence at trainer altitude. You can also check for AIRMET Tangos to get a sense of turbulence at altitude. That...

    CSEL Written Question- Feedback Solicited

When you're doing an airborn check its either using a VOT, meaning you have a ground reference and a radial or 2 VORs tuned to the same NAVAID that must be within 4 degrees of eachother

Flight school/club in the Bay area

I'm not looking for cheap by any means, I think I got mine in 65 hours so 90 seemed very generous and certainly makes people think they're doing great!

Flight school/club in the Bay area

West Valley Flying Club seems very conservative in their estimates of the cost to get flying. That's probably a good thing even though the number looks scary :)

    New to flying

There's a difference in redoing them because of proficiency and redoing them because of the reg. If (and its a big one) you end up checkride ready at 30 hours wouldn't you be kicking yourself for not having the original time? What about wanting to do CPL flying when you have 200 new hours...
