Anyone else call it walking the dog?

I was taught in a J-3 by a WW2 Stearman CFI. About the 5th or 6th hop, he had me slow to a stall. But not stall. That was what he called slow flight and had me do it for five or ten minutes at a time. A few turns were thrown in. I could feel the stall "nibbling" throughout. It was the one...

Asked for tip on a commercial flight?

Back when I worked at a 135 outfit, somebody found a jar and taped it to the inside of the passenger compartment of one of the SK-76s. Up next to the No Smoking-Fasten Seat Belt sign. Whoever it was marked it "TIPS" in big letters, then took a picture of it. There was a short huddle. Who or...

    Navy T-6 down

"Ejection seat" says it all. Amen. A/C & crew landed three miles apart near a point on the AL map called "Gateswood" about 15 NW of Pensacola.

    Navy T-6 down

I understand that the old T-6 didn't have ejection seats. I doubt that any US military org still use radial engines.

    Navy T-6 down

A US Navy T-6 based at Whiting field crashed in Alabama this afternoon. Both pilots ejected safely and walked out of the woods OK.

    Aviation Writer Gordon Baxter

Gordon Baxter was my favorite. He also flew a Mooney and wrote about it a lot. The one that stays in my head was the article that he wrote about the hurricane coming ashore. He was driving home after dark and it caught him around Houston. He was northbound about 100 MPH. The wind was out of the...

Approach trivia: KPHH NDB IAP is gone

They are called Non directional beacon approaches. An automatic direction finder is the usual equipment used. But, before the ADF there was the Low freq receiver with a manual loop. I recall that gear in the old "A" model Birddogs. One of our National Guard unit's four WW2 pilot vets once put me...

    Adjustable-pitch vs. constant speed prop

Some info from the TCDS for Piper PA-22's. Could be a helpful starting point. Example. Fixed pitch wood prop: 11 lbs (Sensenich) Fixed pitch metal prop 25 lbs " Koppers Aeromatic prop 34 lbs Hartzel C/S prop 54 lbs (My guess is that...

    Adjustable-pitch vs. constant speed prop

I flew a J-3 way back that had an A-75 with a Beech R-003 prop. AKA, a Beech-Roby. Controlled by a hand crank installed aft of the throttle. The prop control kinda looked like a window crank for a 1947 Desoto. Shafting ran fwd to the prop where a pinion turned a six inch dia gear on the prop...

Kerosene now $7.99 per gallon in NC

First, I'm not a fuel expert. When I was a Lead Pilot at my Comm Helo outfit, I was responsible for having lots of JetA on hand for ops. It was usual to order 3 tanker trucks per week. The Prist was added into the hose when it went into my 10,000 gal tank. My safety dept told me that biocidal...

Right on. There are autopilots that will take you down to fifty feet RADALT,70 kts and track the localizer until you decide to land (or go Missed)

    Takeoff under the hood?

All RW students at "Mother Rucker" (The USA flight school, now renamed Ft Novosel) had to get signed off on zero-zero take offs to get their wings. Now actually doing one was another thing. First, one needed to have a Special Instrument Rating and have orders cut to use this rating. Other...

Kerosene now $7.99 per gallon in NC

The diesel lawn mower never saw real diesel fuel, the Herman-Nelson heaters used it. I took some home for brush burning. Every diesel vehicle owner ran it in their tanks. (with a qt of xmsn oil per 10 gal.)

Kerosene now $7.99 per gallon in NC

Way back when I was employed flying JetA fueled aircraft, there was no shortage of Non approved auto fuel. When the maintenance guys had to drain an A/C tank, that fuel could not be put back in the main 10,000 gal company tank. And putting it back in any A/C was prohibited. The daily sump...

    Radial engine ownership

So you believe this is a free country. I will never travel again.

A co-worker from the Birmingham area was commuting to work in coastal Louisiana and passed Lake Charles on the Interstate. He was stopped by a local police officer around De Quincy. My friend has always had a carry permit. And a large caliber revolver. The officer asked about weapons and my...

Absolutely sucks loosing a fur baby

So sorry to learn of your loss. My sweetie is also getting on in years, but she is in good health. Born in July, 2010, she is showing some age. Instead of us picking her, she picked my wife and I out when she was still with her mama. She is a mixed breed (Shepard/Husky) wolf hybrid. About 75-80...

can you fulfil your XC time in a sim?

If you use a sim, you lose the flavor of a real X-C. Things like getting cut off on base-to-final by some yahoo on a straight in. The FBO refusing your credit card. The darned engine won't crank. The WX turns ugly.
