    Real TAS in a 180hp C-172

The one disadvantage of the CSP in the Skyhawk is that the nose becomes fairly heavy, more like a 182 as far as landing, ie watch the firewall. I place as much weight in the back as I can, especially with the 62 gallons of fuel. For high and hot operations the CSP is worth it. I talked with the...

What would you do if someone was choking?

Elbow just below the diaphragm, not the chest.

Loss of sight in one eye

Bill, all of us are rooting for you. Stay patient, I think you will be fine regarding the possibility of adapting to vision with one eye. You probably have already adapted quite a bit, and it will only improve. If we can have 18 wheelers being driven by monocular drivers as well as airline...

If you could choose between 2 what would you do??

    58. Sounds like it has been flown and the owner has improved, maintained and flown It more. Too many things have been allowed to deteriorate on the 61. Not sure when overhauls were done, but 900 hrs of a Continental is when we use to closely consider doing a TOP on them. Regardless, the engine...

    Real TAS in a 180hp C-172

68 172 with Alcon conversion(180hp/csp) with flap gap seals and power flow exhaust. 125kts/145mph TAS 6-8 thousand feet at 70% power(23/2300 or 22/2400). Be sure to get aux tanks since you will burn 10 gph which will cut down on your range despite the extra speed. 600 nm very doable non stop...

Route from Lake Havasu to Western Texas

I feel your original plan is fine. Weather permitting, I40 eastbound should be no problem, providing you have tailwinds you can ride(plus no brown outs). Coming back, I’d prefer the southern route, I-10 due to lower terrain and fighting head winds. The more you fly West-East the better...

How Accurate are 14 Day Forecasts?

I’ll start looking a week out, see if forecast is staying stable, trying to be flexible. Two days prior, check MOS. One day out check the TAF.’s along the route. Always prepared to leave a day early or later if there is a big difference in the weather TAF. Flexibility is a must. IFR rating...

“Suspected” Afib leads to Waste of $$$$ and Spec. Issuance

Thoughts...1) what caused the rapid heart rate that lasted for an hour, or do we know? 2) would a general cardiologist order the same tests for a typical 40 y/o patient versus a cardiologist(AME) clearing a pilot to fly? I don’t see the problem with either the first doctor, the AME, or the FAA...

Depression/suicide counseling for 13-year old and future effects on FAA medical

Interesting side note, in 1956 or 57, a TWA airliner flew into the Sandia mountains east of Albuquerque, NM. The official cause was pilot suicide, but was never made public. About 30 years later, after the pilot’s family had petitioned for many years, the official cause was changed to...

Oh I’m excited. My First Airplane!

Not sure about keeping Tanis on 24/7(that’s debatable), but would also heat the cabin up as well to warm up the gyros and instruments before start up. The cabin cover needs to be secured in addition to the straps since the wind can do a number on the windows and antenna. Fly as often as...

X-country from San Diego to upper Mid-West

Much prefer southern route, lower terrain, I-20 to 80 miles east of El Paso then direct, and more airports along the route. Winter time with fast moving fronts, cold temps, short days are not my idea of fun or sight seeing in Santa Fe. It is only about 60 nm further, and in my opinion safer...

Famous (and infamous) people.. who are pilots

Not sure if Sam Walton has been mentioned, but he put his planes to pretty good use on his way to success. Love the stories of him flying around the country, visiting his stores unannounced.

    Best route thru New Mexico?

Agree with I 40, but much prefer going south of Albuquerque thru “ Abo Pass rather than thru the canyon or north, much lower terrain 7500 with highways 60 then 54 back up to I 40 at Santa Rosa. Belen is a cheap fuel stop if one needs to refuel with large long runways. Mountainair and Vaughn are...

    Not progressing on IFR learning

I agree with the recommendations to try another method, ie 3 day seminar, flash cards, hire a tutor. It helped me to have a study partner in which we taught each other and learned from each other while watching an old “preKing” video, where the instructor was videotaped using only a...

    Planeport type hangers

Live in the desert where “carports” make sense, but they sit vacant unless all the hangars are full. The price differential is quite significant as far as the rental rates.

    57 years have passed

It was during lunch period, while a sophomore in HS, every thing was eerily quiet, as the “rumor” quietly spread, no crying(since it was just a rumor at that early time), some wise cracks till it was officially known. Out next door neighbors had a last name of Oswald, they moved away shortly...

    Eye floaters?

Floaters are a symptom, not a diagnosis. Commonly they are benign, occasionally may lead to blindness or worse. Any medical professional can carry around an ophthalmoscope. I’ve had “floaters” since age 25, anytime I get new floaters that I’ve never had before, I get a retinal exam by a retinal...

    Eye floaters?

The question is not what is causing the floaters, but is there a tear in the retina that needs to be treated before it progresses to a retinal detachment. A retinal specialist performing a detailed peripheral exam, looking for tears is what I would and have had done. The odds are it’s...

    Missing Logs

The question was asked, would it affect value? Of course it would. There are some who would not consider a plane without logs. Some would consider purchasing the plane, but very few would ignore the lack of logs, especially if they were ever going to sell it.

    Phoenix Valley experience and help

I don’t know what would beat a 177, for a variety of reasons. 2 doors, low sitting, high wing to block the sun and rain, good reliable and economical engine, good resale. That would be my first choice. Agree the RV’s are pretty tight fit for two. Fine for one person.
