    Digging up old medical records?

Unless there was a significant diagnosis that required follow up they would not require records. Now if you had a stoke 10 years ago without f/u they would want a current evaluation. Have never been asked for records for hernia repair, spinal fusion, appendectomy. If they request old records, be...

    Thinking about taking the Mother of All Road Trips;

Having grown up in Albuquerque, all my relatives from Chicago, and attending college in Pasadena, Route 66 Orion has many fond and not so fond memories. Car breakdowns, no Aircondioning, but tubular evaporative water coolers sticking out the window, carrying water in canvas bags hung on the side...

Recommendations for Socal (KCRQ) - El Paso (KELP) - Enid (KWDG)

Think there might be a better choice than Roswell regarding fuel, courtesy car, nearby motels. Unless you’re into space aliens. Usually the smaller west texas towns have cheaper gas, courtesy cars and nearby motels. Try Brownfield, Tx (KBFE), you can use car overnight.

When maybe, could be, possible, or perhaps becomes a diagnosis?

I think one would have a difficult time explaining a vision loss in one eye to the FAA regardless of whether the ophthalmologist put down a tentative diagnosis or not. Any neurological event is a problem without a diagnosis as far as the FAA is concerned. Hopefully the doctor can find the...

    Pituitary Surgery

Assuming uneventful surgery, will need a definitive diagnosis, new medications, period of time to monitor recovery. I see at least a couple years of careful following until one can call the surgery “uneventful”. Will they get all the tumor or some of it? Will they have to irradiate later? Just a...

Ocular migraines - What's the threshold for the FAA to want a neuro exam?

? Ocular migraines are siblings to epilepsy? Do not see any relationship between reduced blood flow in the retina lasting 15-60 minutes and epilepsy which involves abnormal electrical activity in the CNS. Patient has a long history of migraines with visual aura. Nothing he has stated would make...

Ocular migraines - What's the threshold for the FAA to want a neuro exam?

I see no advantage going thru a lot of tests by a neurologist. You have a diagnosis that seems very accurate according to your symptoms. Very little has changed thru the years. If you come up with new symptoms that you’ve never had before, I’d change my advice.

Books that would have/would have changed your aviation experience

Not recommending because it helped my flying, but ‘North Star over my Shoulder’ and‘Flight of Passage’ captured the essence of why I fly and continue to fly for 48 years as a cherished hobby that I can share with friends and family.

Routing advice for ferrying Piper Archer from Philadelphia to Los Angeles

Service ceiling may be higher, but wouldn’t want to fly westbound any higher than 8500ft for most the trip due to headwinds/ground speed. I-10 is my ace-in-hole, especially going westbound.

Best Plane for 150-200 NM Trips

How long does it take to drive this distance? Some 200 nm mile trips are better driven by car(straight interstate) while others are more easily flown(think no direct roads, multiple towns, 2 lane highways). I have two daughters that both live 400nm away, one easily driven, the other harder to...

Buying a plane for building hours

I agree as well, rent. Might cost a little more, but way less risk. I would never finance a toy, vacation, hobby.

    Dale Snodgrass crash in Idaho

I too feel they will end very thorough in looking at the evidence, but be very circumspect in determining the exact cause other than “pilot error”.

    Dale Snodgrass crash in Idaho

Have nothing to add other than my condolences to his wife and family. I read this column to remind myself there are many ways Ernie Gann’s ‘fate is the hunter’ can apply in our lives. Despite our best efforts to reduce risks, whether flying, driving, sitting on our couch, walking the dog, etc...

Appears that I'm grounded for 2 years, now what?

Keep your head in the game as you stated and others have stated. Some lifestyle changes might be in order as well. I try to do my best every year to find something that is more healthy I can do and give up something that is not as healthy. After 58 years of flying being my primary hobby, its...

Solo own a 182 vs. 1/4 Partnership in a Cirrus?

Just having my plane fueled, ready to fly at a moment notice, brings me a sense of freedom, even if I haven’t flown in a month. If I rented or was in a partnership, I would probably put a pencil to every flight, seeing if it was worth the cost. Being a sole owner, I know the plane needs to be...

    Thoughts on Vans RV?

Owned a RV 6 for 8 yrs. Loved it, but for any trip over 2 hrs, preferred my slower C 172 due to space for luggage, ice cooler, passenger comfort, ability to lay back and let the copilot(auto pilot)fly while taking a shot nap, ventilation, high wing blocking the sun. Just got back from 4,000...
