    NE Ohio area

Work - not exciting enough to keep me awake on a slow Friday afternoon, though.

    NE Ohio area

I just moved to Wooster (KBJJ), so I'm probably too much of an area newbie, but ask anything you like.

    Lightning strike

Not lightning, but electrical fire on the ground. These have appeared elsewhere on the web in the past with the real story.

    4th of July, Fireworks flight

I've done it a couple of times and enjoyed it. The way I look at it, you take a pleasant evening/nightime flight in an airplane, and add fireworks. So, you can't hear them go off, but you don't have to deal with crowds, traffic jams, finding a parking place, or mosquitos.

    Band Brat

Brilliant! (low brass for me, but I have a Besson C trumpet in the closet) Here's some for the bone players: http://thepetersonproject.com/fun/index.html

    Tell me about Cessna 177B's

Ditto on Cardinal Flyers. I've had a 1974 177B for eight years and am very happy.

GPS accuracy on a Foreflight Sectional

I've occasionally noticed a slight difference between positions of the little dot that indicates a route waypoint (say, a VOR) and the position shown on the sectional overlay. It's not much, but unless you are using Foreflight for geocaching, it's not going to be enough to throw you off course.

    iPad withdrawal

I use mine mostly as a EFB, but at home, it's handy to be able to check the weather or Facebook from anywhere in the house. If I want to know if it's raining, I'll open up Foreflight rather than look out the window.

    Avionics questions

I'm considering similar for my 1974 177B. I currently have a KX-155 and MX-300 navcoms, a Garmin 320 transponder, and the original ARC ADF and Navomatic 300 autopilot (both actually still work!) For an audio panel, I have Cessna's original installation, consisting of a set of toggle switches in...

    Aviation Themed Items

I've got the Ohio DOT sectional map on the wall in the hangar. Tons of books and magazines in the hangar and at home. On my desk at work, I have my old attitude indicator and a directional gyro I bought from somebody else. Both have the cases cut away to show off the inner workings.

PIREP: ForeFlight - charging devices in flight

I haven't used any of the other devices, but I picked up the New Trent last year for a flight down to TX (11 hours flight time down, and 7.5 back). It did a fine job of powering the iPad, and it may have even recharged the iPad battery a little while in use. I did each trip in three legs, with...

    Aircraft Gender?

Yellowbird is a she. I refer to other Cardinals as her siblings. Other Cessna types are cousins, except the 210, which is her elder brother.

I just got a private message here on POA from a wealthy widow in Ghana who is looking to dispose of $4.5 million. Anybody want to help me spend it?

[NA] Contract vs. Salary pay rates for tech jobs

I'm a contractor on W-2 status, meaning that the contracting agency does, at minimum, the payroll taxes and other paperwork. I've been in some contract positions where no benefiits were provided, and others that provided benefits comparable to full time employees. Some positions may be...
