FAA will lay off all ARTCC meteorologists and use automated forecasting instead

A buddy of mine is a retired ARTCC meteorologist. One of his responsibilities each day was to help plan the flow of traffic through the sector. That was probably his largest task: keep an eye on things and keep updating his forecasts throughout the day. Center relies on that info to know...

A barbecue adventure, the saga unfolds.

Haven’t quite been able to figure his history. He’s around 10 months old. He was in the shelter for a couple months, I think brought in as a stray. But he apparently was already neutered when brought in. His left ear has been tipped, you might be able to see that in the photo. That’s...

A barbecue adventure, the saga unfolds.

I was packing up the leftover Q from the other day into dinner sized vacuum pack portions. We got a cat from the orphanarium last weekend and have been working on training him to stay off the counter, with some success. Today he was content to sit still on the floor and watch me work…until I...

NA - Need house smoke detectors

We have 7. But there aren’t any in the same room. There are two that are close together but they are on either side of a bedroom door. There’s probably some reason yours are located that way. It might not be a GOOD reason, though.

    Where should a beginner start???

It’s awesome to get started this early. You have your whole life to learn, might as well start as soon as you can! Whenever you do find a CFI and start training, remember to ask “Why?” a lot. Young people tend to want to learn quickly and seem to repeat a lot of what they’re told without...

    Where should a beginner start???

I’ll add: as long as you’ve never been prescribed anything like Adderall or Ritalin. Way too many people don’t realize there’s a diagnosis attached to that.

NA - Need house smoke detectors

Yeah - if one triggers, they all trigger. If the one in your basement senses something, you'll know about it in your upstairs bedroom. I didn't think about interweb connected smoke alarms being a thing, but I guess there's an app for everything. I suppose it would be nice to know your alarms...

NA - Need house smoke detectors

We had one that kept tripping so I blew it out with compressed air and a spider came out.

NA - Need house smoke detectors

I haven’t looked for a while: are there still hardwired smokes that still use 9v or have they all gone to the 10yr batteries?

NA - Need house smoke detectors

The last time I replaced my smokes I picked up a contractor pack, 6 I think, of either Kidde or First Alert. The basic 9V kind. Our code is one smoke alarm per floor (including basement) and one per bedroom. A 2 story house needs three plus one per BR so the 6 pack plus one more took care of...

    Life-Changing Bands (or Songs)

Since we had a Motorhead and Rolling Stones theme going, here’s a little of both. Turn it up to 11.

Important aspects of flying (outside of passing the checkride) that a pilot should learn for PP.

Not feeling picked on at all. I’ve heard the saying (can’t remember the exact phrase), “you’re never better than on your checkride”. It’s what you’re preparing for, practicing for, training for, and where you’re spending all your time and money. I think I can get my e-logbook to show a graph...

    IFR Rating

Lots and lots of coffee. If you can nail that ILS all the way down with the jitters and trying not to pee, you can do anything. Oh, yeah, and trim.

How to enter a holding pattern?

It's interesting to me how the differences in real life and training show. In real life, "be near the fix and at the right altitude". But in training, it's all about precision and I think that's a pretty good way to approach most aspects of any kind of flying.

A barbecue adventure, the saga unfolds.

Spent the day cooking. Between my buddy and I, we did 2 pork butts, 2 slabs back ribs, 2 slabs spare ribs, 1 top round beef roast, 1 brisket, one chicken, and one pork belly worth of pork belly burned ends. And lots of cheddar jalapeno brats, chorizo, and Italian sausage. Pix: beef roast...
