    Synology Network Attached Storage (NAS)?

This doesn't strike me as a great deal. For a 5TB source file collection, I calculated $115/month on S3. That is pretty hefty for personal use. Double your file totals in a couple of years, and now it's near 3 grand a year to store your vacation source videos. Ouch!

    Synology Network Attached Storage (NAS)?

I'm going to start with this. Any particular reason you are transcoding your h.264 footage? Am I right in I suspecting this is the main thing driving your massive storage needs? If you're transcoding for performance, would a system upgrade or use of video proxies be more cost-effective than...

    Helicopter Down in East River

Let me rephrase: Being harnessed in way that will require cutting belts to get out, on a low-level flight over water, with doors off, is a little too high on my risk meter. Do you have stats on the fixed wing vs. helicopter water landings, out of curiosity?

    Helicopter Down in East River

I'd have a really hard time getting into a helicopter knowing I'd likely be dead if an emergency landing was necessary. Come to think of it, I have done a helicopter tour over water before, and probably didn't pay enough attention to belts and egress procedures.

    Drones In Controlled Airspace

Great reply. The only thing I would add is that all the 107 operators I know are very professional. They do things by the book, which at the current time requires waiting 90-180+ days just to get authorization to fly (in some cases) barely above the trees/rooftops. Extremely frustrating for...

    Prozac?

Interesting.. And it makes me curious. Take the case of someone who has gone through several difficult times in their life and found SSRIs to be helpful, but stopped the meds when things got better. From the FAA's perspective, should they have stayed on the meds the whole time? Or maybe they...

    DWI/3rd Class Medical/HIMS

Sounds like it could get into circular reasoning... "The FAA thinks you're an addict. You must be an addict!" "So you want to be a pilot and the government has a problem with you? You must be an alcoholic, because it's having an adverse effect on your life!" Not to dismiss the driving at...

Southwest engine fire in SLC - 02/26/18

Different time and situation, but here's higher quality video of what this type of thing looks like:

    Legality of transporting alcohol

No, no. "It was grape juice when I took off!"

    Helicopter crashes after evading drone

I could go for stiff penalties. Let's enforce the rules as they are, to start.

    Helicopter crashes after evading drone

All right, but what regulations do you propose?
  12. F

    Helicopter crashes after evading drone

They are regulated. See Part 107 and the Special Rule for Model Aircraft. In the case of a low-flying aircraft, the drone operator is required to see and avoid. What further regulations do you have in mind?

    Helicopter crashes after evading drone

A matter of time for what? What are you wanting the FAA to do?

14 Lessons Every Pilot Must Learn Video

Interesting video, but lots of wrong conclusions/lessons. e.g. the first one is a touch-and-go gear error, not "fly the aircraft until the engine stops" "Maximum cross wind component is there for a reason"? I take it this instructor won't take me up for practice in a 172 with 16 knot crosswind...

    Landing at VFR Minimums

Nice video, and looked like good experience. Sorry for the thread sidetrack about speed, just something I noticed.

    Landing at VFR Minimums

I always thought it was a factor. No? Below is an extreme example, but I'm thinking it's hard to porpoise like this when you cross the fence with minimal excess energy:

    Landing at VFR Minimums

At 5:22, the airspeed inches up close to 80 on short final. He's definitely doing 75 over the threshold. This isn't necessarily bad piloting depending on what your plan is for the landing, but it's waaaaay more airspeed than a 172 needs. If he's consistently over 70 at the numbers, he's putting...

    Landing at VFR Minimums

Approach speeds seem very fast-- he needs to get together with the guy that almost landed in the bushes (the Confession thread), and they can average out their approach speeds to come up with something more reasonable.

Confession is good for the soul...

Derail the post? We were already talking about hot air balloons. :-) Thanks for the video. I see that most landings are made over grass, bare ground, or water. Good places for you to practice maybe!

So, are you going to enlighten us about what exactly you were trying to do? What's a max performance landing?
