    Tales of a Rusty Pilot

You got in the airplane for the first time in a long time and flew (or did something like flying). That was the hard part. You know what needs work now, know the frustrations, and the good thing is that it should get much easier from here. Good luck!

Can I still be a pilot?

I'll second the recommendation of Dr. Bruce. If you want a quick answer from some guy on the internet, my gut feeling is that you do have a chance, with some hoops to go through. Note that there are other show-stoppers like ADHD, anxiety, etc. that some people don't think about. The great thing...

Can I still be a pilot?

Sounds like you have more than one issue then.. this could get tricky. You'll need an AME that knows what he's doing. Currently on meds?

Can I still be a pilot?

Just be sure you're up front and honest on your application. A misdemeanor shouldn't be an issue, but hiding things is an issue. Good luck!

    Skew-T question

What is the best app to use for Skew-T? I've been using the free one on Android that works pretty well. It is kind of strange the way it handles time though, and only lets you select certain hours in the day. I've been glancing at the Skew-T before each flight to see how accurately it predicts...

    Another Cirrus down

A lot of flying is about risk and managing risk. Flying single engine at night-- even in places that are fairly flat-- is not a risk I choose to accept most of the time. If I had BRS, that would move the needle a long ways towards acceptable risk for me.

    First Solo....well, kinda, sorta...

His CFI was extremely good. So good, the pilot thought that landing must be a piece of cake.

Coolest thing you've ever gotten drunk and done.

Your medical certificates are all hereby revoked. It is clear that everyone here has a drinking problem. You may reapply after no less than five years completely sober. Thank you.

The end of flying as we know it??

They don't need a license though.

    NA Work for yourself? NA

Maybe, but you'll have to compete with 60,000+ part 107 operators, plus the unlicensed "my cousin will take pictures of your house for $50" guys. It can be done, especially if you find a specialty and get good at it, but it's not a gold mine for everyone.

Partial Engine Failure, Off Airport Landing

It has to be a hard decision to turn away from the runway when it's right there, but it might have saved him from serious injury.

    First driverless car pedestrian death

When this thread started, I was pretty optimistic about driverless car tech. Now that more fact have emerged, I think we're a long way off. When the Uber car drives right into a moving human-size object, and the Tesla will happily slam you into a concrete barrier at 60+ mph (faded lane markings...

Apparent plane crash on TPC Scottsdale Golf Course

You are probably right. Power loss is possible, but unlikely. More likely: They just screwed up and did a panic turn.

Apparent plane crash on TPC Scottsdale Golf Course

Why the sustained, descending left turn though? Was the instructor that distracted that he didn't notice and say "Hey-- level this thing out"?

Apparent plane crash on TPC Scottsdale Golf Course

At 0:36, pause and measure. I calculate 38 degrees of bank. There aren't a whole lot of good reasons to be doing this at low altitude right after takeoff. It would be a very unwise thing to do if you were concerned about poor climb rate. I could see someone doing this in an attempt to make it to...

Apparent plane crash on TPC Scottsdale Golf Course

A 40 degree (+/-), low altitude, descending turn does not strike me as normal.

Apparent plane crash on TPC Scottsdale Golf Course

Since we're all just speculating, I'm going to say you're right on the engine failure. If they were concerned about climb rate, I don't think they would have made the steep turn just off the runway. Instead, it looks like a panic turn after an engine failure, angling hard and trying to make the...

Video of Air Canada plane nearly landing on taxiway

From the ATC recording, Air Canada says "We see some lights on the uh, runway there. Please confirm we are cleared to land?" ATC responds "There is no one on the runway but you." That's some scary target fixation there. You would hope you'd be able to see the big picture in a situation like...
