Proposed Restrictions at San Carlos Airport (SQL)

What a silly argument. I live just outside of the Class D for KBJC, which is a pretty darn active GA airport. The barn where we keep our horse is only a mile and a half from the runway. We get a ton of flights over our house (and the barn) each day, and they are no louder than the cars...

    Crash near Palmer Lake, CO

Yeah, other news sources have mentioned the same aircraft as that person quoted above, but it's not clear where they got that information. Like you said though, it wasn't hard to connect the dots with that information (the plane was a bit more unique than a C172). I was originally supposed to...

    Part 141 or part 61?

I agree with some of the other comments. I received my private pilot and instrument training through a Part 141 school. That environment was very structured, and while the flight instructor still mattered, the structure of the program helped to make sure that the training was thorough and...

    Suggestions for practicing crosswind landings

I haven't had that one directly, but a similar situation with a pilot I used to fly with. Back when I was a TFO on my department's helicopter I flew with another pilot (good friend, great guy) on a regular basis who had a lot of time in our 407. He would often place an open styrofoam cup of...

    Crash near Palmer Lake, CO

Yeah, that's why I'm withholding, but I'm 99% on this, just based on what I've put together in Google searches.

    Crash near Palmer Lake, CO

A Google search of that name shows photos of someone by that name flying an older aircraft. Plus, her other comments made it seem that she was rather upset with the news posting the pictures of the aircraft to begin with. I'm only speculating here, but I'm guessing that she probably had some...

    Crash near Palmer Lake, CO

Just talked to a friend who was in the area and saw the aftermath of this crash. Still very little known about the incident on the news. I hate to speculate, but any of you other Colorado folks can also attest to the fact that the weather in the Front Range was FAR from ideal for flying...

    Radio Equipped vs. Not

There seem to be some folks who are intensely in favor of NORDO flying (possibly some in this thread). I'm not saying that NORDO shouldn't be allowed, but I personally prefer to have the greatest possible chance of knowing where other traffic is when I'm flying in the same sky as them. "See...

    Airman Cerification Standards

In my work we have often noticed that there are two things our employees hate more than anything: 1) Change. 2) The way things are.

Non standard phraseology: Does that bug controllers?

An instructor who was that anal about meaningless stuff like that (to the point of trying to dime you out on the radio for fun) would have driven me crazy… there are plenty of things that demand perfect attention to detail in the aviation world, but what you described isn't one of them.

Instrument Proficiency Check for someone LONG out of currency?

So, the last instrument approach I flew was on 08/28/2002. Needless to say, I'm a bit out of date. I only recently returned to recreational airplane flying after a long break, but I've been thinking of doing some home study in preparation for an IPC that I'll probably do sometime this year...

    Odd Plane Circling

That's almost certainly not a standard patrol-function LE flight (and we usually use helicopters anyway)… the flight track just doesn't resemble that of a LE aircraft doing standard patrol functions. And, I doubt it is a traffic watch, though that is possible. But, as others mentioned, a...

background checks for EAA Young Eagles pilots?

To me, a pilot's certificate and medical should be enough for this purpose. Just because I can pass a background check doesn't mean I should always have to. And, I say this as someone who has flown protective details for the POTUS on a number of occasions at work.

    O2 on the cheap

Ha... I was even thinking that as I posted my comment. We certainly have more than enough folks around here these days. Oxygen around 8.5 makes me laugh, too. My wife grew up at 9,500 feet out here!

Making the most of 0.5 hr flight

Those Pups look like fun little aircraft… a quick Google search shows that they make a two-seat version, but I bet those are hard to find (I'd want a second seat, personally). Looks cheap to fly though! As for the idea of 0.5 hour hops, I see nothing wrong with that. Personally, I find that...

    O2 on the cheap

I doubt they'd last long, but it might be okay for a short burst if you felt the need due to symptoms that were causing you to feel the need to descend. Alternatively, you could move to Colorado and acclimate to altitude! While I wouldn't do it due to regs prohibiting the practice, I'm...

Anybody want to buy a nice 310?

Thanks for sharing your story! Like others around here, I always do wonder about the path(s) that others have taken to achieve their own brand of success in life. My current career path won't ever bring me financial riches, but I do it for other reasons. Nevertheless, I'm always keeping my...

    Airspeed is... WTF... alive?

I agree with what you're saying here. Even though they are falling out of favor these days, needle gauges have always been easier to interpret quickly, at least in my mind. In a quick glance I can tell if all of the needles are where they should be, while I can't do that with a number that I...

Pros/Cons of Joining the Civil Air Patrol?

I have a lot of time behind a FLIR console at work. We used ours in a hunting bad guys capacity, but it was always very useful to our mission. I'm surprised the system WY uses isn't working well (again, different mission profile, perhaps).

Pros/Cons of Joining the Civil Air Patrol?

Yeah, unfortunately I have to admit that I understand the bureaucracy better than you might imagine. Though I've never been through it with CAP, I have attended NIMS classes for my job, and I have watched BIG government complicate some seemingly simple tasks in the past. In many ways, public...
