USE OF FAR/AIM ON CPL ORAL EXAM

*bringing this thread back to life* I'm not really asking a question as much as making an observation: how much content a student has memorized vs. how much is acceptable to refer to the FAR/AIM during the oral portion of a checkride seems to be subjective. I think the collective wisdom here...

    Gary Betzner HBO Docuseries

I believe the 2017 film 'American Made' was the biopic (partially fictionalized) version of this story - also a good watch

    IPAD mini kneeboard

I feel the same way - mini is the perfect size for me, and while I'm glad I learned to fly in 2001 when everything seemed more complicated than it is today - I can't imagine using paper charts or A/FDs ever again. Added bonus: you can reference your POH, FARs, and AIM (as well as other...

    IPAD mini kneeboard

I use this (image below) with the ipad 6 ... simple, does the job, but requires that you have a case around the screen - I use this case (but you can use any case really).

VFR Nav Log- ok to use GPS (IFR) waypoints?

When did I say it was unnecessary? I was just asking for clarification, which this community gave (and I'm appreciative). I'm not challenging the answer, in fact I've said in this thread that it's a good point. The only point I've made (other than asking a question) is that I believe a pilot can...

VFR Nav Log- ok to use GPS (IFR) waypoints?

I don't recall confessing that i need electronic aids, but it is fair to say i use the tech available to reduce workload. I also use Google maps in my car - does that mean i need more work and practice driving a car?

VFR Nav Log- ok to use GPS (IFR) waypoints?

Assuming you mean the GPS satellite system (not related to the hardware and software in the aircraft), then that's a good argument for using VOR (or visual) waypoints. Makes me wonder: what happens if you're an IFR pilot on a GPS flight plan in IMC and the GPS system goes down? Many of my IFR...

VFR Nav Log- ok to use GPS (IFR) waypoints?

Fair question. GPS is more accurate and allows me to stay focused on flying (the situational awareness I get from a GPS results in a lighter workload than doing so manually). Just trying to take workload off my shoulders so that I can focus on flying the plane.

VFR Nav Log- ok to use GPS (IFR) waypoints?

Funny - I got my private license in 2001 - i'm pretty sure i used NDB, ADF, and VOR navigation. I'm not what you call a child of the magenta line.

VFR Nav Log- ok to use GPS (IFR) waypoints?

Sorry, CAX is the FAA's way of shortening "Commercial Pilot Airplane" - not asking anything about schools.

VFR Nav Log- ok to use GPS (IFR) waypoints?

Hello For the purpose of a CAX check-flight, I need to prepare a VFR nav log - like literally the old-school paper one. My checkride is in a /G c172 (G1000). Rather than using VORs as waypoints, I'd like to use GPS waypoints which are found in low IFR charts. Is this allowed, or must the...

    NJ Rental for solo flight

Check out CDW - Air Fleet training is well-run shop. Planes are clean and well-maintained. I think Certified Flyers in MMU is still alive, but their fleet is a lot smaller than it was a few years ago.

    NJ Rental for solo flight

NJ is a big place - what part of NJ are you in? If near to NYC, both MMU and CDW have plenty of solo rental options.

    ForeFlight Subscription Changes

It's the first price increase in six years (20% in a 7%+ inflationary environment). Also, in that time, tons of new features. Sort of like Amazon Prime's cost increase, I get enough value from it that I'm happy to pay more. I'll probably look at switching when it reaches ~$350 or so.

    Question on Constant Speed Propellers

I cannot find anything in the cessna 182T POH that describes the order of operations - which the group-wisdom suggests is: left-to-right for descent, right-to-left for climb. For those who saw it in their POH, which section?

    iPad Mini as an EFB

If you're getting the cellular version only for the purpose of internal GPS, I might suggest using a stratux/stratus instead. Rationale: you get METAR/TAF/Wx info as well as GPS.
