Do You Pitch Up First For Best Glide?

Im in the hold altitude and let the speed bleed off camp. The altitude gained vs speed lost in the pitch up maneuver is nominal, IMO. I'd rather use that energy in a turn towards my chosen landing site.

    FAA Considerign Eliminationg Circling Approaches

I've only been to TEB once, and I'm sure the controllers are less than understanding when it comes to the intricacies of maneuvering ~500'AGL over congested areas, all for the sake of traffic flow, but safety should be the #1 priority. Too bad external factors override the PIC ability to say...

    Good for another two years

I will say though, If there are other aircraft in the traffic pattern, I'm not the d-bag that cuts 'em all off to execute my flawless straight in. Maybe when I can afford something that has a higher approach speed than a -172 I'll apply for that right-of-way waiver with the FSDO ;)

    Good for another two years

The hardest part of a straight in used to be judging distance from the runway. Now thanks to the gadgetry most of us fly with (GPS, iDevices, etc), that's not much of an obstacle anymore. A quick crunch of the numbers to give a roughly 3-3.5* glide path and you will be all set. I like...

    FAA Considerign Eliminationg Circling Approaches

I have to say, the most uncomfortable I've ever been in an airplane has been during circling approaches. I can count on one hand how many I've done in actual conditions, but even the practice circles are unnecessary at best.

    C17 Pilot in the house

Hey Glenn, hate to burst your bubble, but the mechanic isn't the one to approve or disapprove airworthiness in a USAF aircraft. Yes, the mechanic has a say, but is far from the final authority. And if engineering is unwilling to document the alteration, there is no basis for the waiver, so the...

    Is it possible to....

I can't drive by an Arby's without feeling like I'm going to soil myself, thanks to the trauma of past experience with the chain. Yuck.

    Frederick FDK chaos

Ya I think I know who you are talking about. I hope one day I have enough money and time to fly as often as he does. I'm happy for him!

    Frederick FDK chaos

Irony of the whole thing is it's the home of AOPA and their world-renowned Air Safety Institute! Certainly need to be on your toes at that field!

    Frederick FDK chaos

I've had a few interesting experiences at FDK myself, but overall a positive experience. It is a very busy airport, hence the introduction of a control tower (about 5 years ago?), but it could be better. Lots of primary training going on, as well as IFR practice approaches most days. This...

When can you afford an airplane?

This pretty much sums up the internal struggle for me. Renting zaps the fun for me since i'm doing mental calculations of how much a given flight period will cost. Once I get over that obstacle, I will be making the plunge into ownership and just enjoy the ups and downs as best I can (like...

    Aerial Photography Internships??

Who said one has to be a pilot in order to conduct aerial photography? It's not unheard of for professional photographers to expand their services or to explore a different genre of photography all together. Additionally, I'm not aware of any regulation that prevents someone, professional or...

Government Charter Aircraft - Why Biz Jets?

He did it a few times, IIRC, while VPOTUS. The disruption to the commuters aboard the train (security measures, delays is service, etc.) caused more of a headache than anticipated.

Government Charter Aircraft - Why Biz Jets?

Like most everything in this business, there are waivers. In the platforms I have operated, those waivers were few and far between. Doing a bit of research, things like A/R are allowed with pax as long as they are briefed, but T&Gs seem to be universally no-no's. Regarding the -130 LL...

Government Charter Aircraft - Why Biz Jets?

Most, if not all, USAF aircraft are prohibited from conducting any type of training with pax aboard, to include touch and goes.

Government Charter Aircraft - Why Biz Jets?

The argument for putting them on an otherwise scheduled training mission is an attractive one (to some), but in reality, would take training away from the crews. For example, put a congressman in a KC-135 from their home state to DC, and you eliminate the A/R training for the Boom Operator, or...

Government Charter Aircraft - Why Biz Jets?

The article Tim quoted specifies a contract company. I have flown 89AW aircraft for 7 years and counting. I will tell you there is much more than meets the eye regarding the aircraft and missions flown. Much more than the tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists here (and elsewhere on the...

Government Charter Aircraft - Why Biz Jets?

I am a political news junkie. :D So this has been in the political press a fair amount; including on how the agencies do a lot of the contracting for it. Tim Thanks. A bit of advice, if I may: Don't believe everything you read on the internet.
