Older small copters - seem like fun - but nearly nonexistent?

So, my friend owns a 47G5. A number of years ago while at the airport, he takes the Mrs for a short hop, lands on the dolly and back into its hanger. It was the last flight before he completely overhauled his 47. The following weekend we stopped by his hanger before our flight, there in the...

    Taylorcraft down California

Yes, you are correct. That’s what I was thinking and it appears Possum did the math.

    Taylorcraft down California

Hey Possum, how many miles by your estimates, would the crash zone be from his takeoff point? I’m curious, if it were 50 or more miles, he’d have to have an ELT on board. In that case, if it were me…or any other conscious pilot, Id want to find the ELT and make sure it was functioning if not...

    Better coast for GA?

Hate to be political, but if you sway left you will probably love NY or San Fran. Remember, you will not only be flying from said area, but living there. I’d be seriously concerned about my safety and security and that of raising a family in those areas,, to include the rest of CA also. As for...

When / where to contact the tower?

To the OP, I’ve v flown that many times heading back to Block Island and Long Island. The 5 mile ring around MVY is only 1.6 miles from the shoreline. Take off and make your turnouts to the right, gain altitude and call if you like for clearance or just continue on. This ain’t brain or rocket...

    Most Reliable/Longlived/Proven LSA Airplane?

Guess Paul Bertorelli hasn’t flown a SLING 2. Has got to be the easiest plane to land, well at least IMO.

    Most Reliable/Longlived/Proven LSA Airplane?

I considered a SEAREY and the RV-12, before going with the SLING 2. I’ve been more than happy with the SLING. Insurance turned me off the SEAREY, even with 500+ retract hours and less hull cost than the other two, they wanted $8k. Ridiculous!

    Garmin Smart Glide

Dam shame that certified a/c have to pay for the feature, which Garmin says is free. I loaded the new update into my G3X and did the configuration myself, after watching a video. Entering the a/c’s VG and Sink rate enables it. You then set parameters for runway. Looking to test fly it next week.

How do you haul your mogas to the aircraft / hangar?

I toyed with this idea, but walked away. Even the smallest tank would have leave me with too much fuel that has the potential to loose its potency before Id use it. So in the end I use 5 gallon cans and a siphon system. It quick and easy. My plane has 39 gallon tanks, its usually only a top off...

    Avionics TSO v. non TSO

The sad part about the entire TSO/Non TSO equipment is the fact that it’s all about a paper trail. In most cases there is NO DIFFERENCE in the actual product (Fact) just the designation and paperwork behind it. Take for example and told to me by several “Reps” the G5’s, as are the G3X all the...

    Skytyper Fatal 8/20

Don’t remember them using Tigers. I was based at FRG 1989-2000 and they were always parked in ECHO area along the taxiway. At that time, if I remember correctly, they flew AT-6’s and one SNJ. I could be wrong and it’s the other way around, it’s only been, what, 21+ Years.

    Skytyper Fatal 8/20

So sad! It will all play out a year from now when the NTSB publishes its final report. Until then its all a mystery. I wonder how many of the T-6’s are from the original batch of Skytyper T-6”s. As a kid growing up in Flushing NY, back in the 60’s, I spent many a summer afternoon at Flushing...

    Plane Wash ?

So, I’m based at an airport that doesn’t have a place for us to wash our planes. I’ve spoken to the airport manager and he states its an environmental issue (DEP). I find this ridiculous and have been wondering, does anyone else based in NYS have this problem? I was based years ago at FRG and...

    Garmin Smart glide

Cudos to Garmin, it’s even available to those with EAB and LSA aircraft, equipped with the G3X Touch. Doesn’t even need to have a separate navigation radio tied to the EFIS, as found in certified A/C. It’s supposed to be in the next G3X Touch software update.
