    Buying a Sonex!

Really excited, my hubby and I just made a deal on a sweet tri-gear Sonex. We already own a Grumman Tiger, so this will be primarily my hubby's commuter plane... he works at an FBO that's a 60-70 minute drive away on a dark, treacherous country road... so now he'll fly airport-to-airport in 15...

Anyone got bitten by the aviation bug much later in life?

I'm an outlier- didn't have much interest until I realized my husband and I could actually afford a plane! Then I got going. Two years ago I did my PPL in 6 months at age 57, and now starting on my IR. I'm definitely hooked now!

IFR Written This Week - Nervous / Any Advice?

I just heard a DPE at a FAA seminar say that he definitely looked at the score an applicant had gotten on his written, and adjusted his oral accordingly. If the pilot had a 90+ score, he figured you knew your stuff, and he wouldn't sweat you unduly on the oral.

Best test prep software IR written exam?

Doing King test prep now, about 1/2way through.. solid explanations, no-nonsense approach. Using laptop 89% of the time but also bought Photon app for ipad use. OK, but the figures are a bit hard for these old eyes to see on the ipad Mini.

Aspen Evolution paired with Century IIB autopilot

That is a cool and instructive vid! I have the single Aspen, which is cool enough, but two??? Nice!

Aspen Evolution paired with Century IIB autopilot

LOL. Philly does seem to keep coming up,doesn't it? If I get to Philly from North Carolina, I will really have set a new standard for a missed approach! Thanks for the tips, I'm sure its old hat to everyone else, just new to me. Allison

Aspen Evolution paired with Century IIB autopilot

Thanks, that's helpful-- don't want to end up in Philly! Still flying VFR at the moment, so enroute mostly is at issue here. I am doing ground school for IFR and wrapping my mind around all that. (Martha King, anyone?) Anyway, I'll give it a try with the hubby in the other seat to help out...

Aspen Evolution paired with Century IIB autopilot

Hi, all- Our Grumman just had its CII-B autopilot repaired, so we are finally able to use it... but unsure of procedures since it's slaved to a Garmin 650 and an Aspen Evolution. The Century and its manual pre-date that equipment, so not much help. Anyone able to point to anything online for...

    FAAS team members?

Well, I'm not sure I have any expertise to offer, as a 200-hr PPL, but I can do something productive, I'm sure. Sounds like a good way to get to know more aviation-minded folks in my area, and that can't be a bad thing! looking on the positive side, Allison

do you leave your plane open in the hangar?

Closed, with cowl plugs and pitot covers installed. Lots of homeless bugs in NC looking for a place to crawl in.

    FAAS team members?

The FAA Safety Team leader at my field (KSUT in Oak Island, NC) has invited me to join her team and help out with upcoming FAA events. Has anyone else done this, and what did you actually end up doing? I think that finding good speakers and pertinent topics is part of the gig.

    Piper Archer vs. Grumman Tiger

My husband I bought a '79 Tiger as our first plane, and we've been really happy with it. Ours is IFR capable, it's responsive on the controls and like many have pointed out, the visibility is unequaled. We've flown in the utility mode a few times (back seats folded down for cargo,) and the only...

Is this iPad OK for FF, etc?

I agree with Cowman-- I just bought a Mini to supplement our full-size iPad, and I got one with 32gb... our regular iPad is 16gb,and Foreflight just about eats up all the memory. The mini is a much better size for our Tiger, which has a smallish panel and limited mounting options.

    Grumman Tiger Overview

Re: My Tiger Yes, up to 110kts... but it is rather windy and noisy, so we pretty much keep it closed up in flight. However, taxiing with it open is wonderful here in the South.

In the market for a nice headset

Guess I'm an outlier, but I REALLY like my Sigtronics ANR sets.. I think they retail for about 350, but I bought 2 sets at different times on eBay for less than 150 each. The noise reduction is quite good, they're sturdy and I've never had a problem with either set I own.
